Title: GS500 idling problem
Post by: mjmcondor on September 10, 2006, 03:49:07 PM
I have a 2000 GS500 am having some small problems.  I figure I'd ask what anybody thinks before trying to fix it.

The other day I was riding and hit a big bump.  Seemingly after that, my bike started to run differently.  When I start it, even after warming it up for a while, it stals when it idles (it now idles around or below 1 RPM).  If I set the choke properly, it fixes this but I shouldn't have to do that.  It also doesn't seem to pick up as well.  There are no fluids leaking and everything seems to look alright.  I'm thinking maybe I just have to reset the idle RPM but I want to see what anyone else thought before doing this.

Get the bike nice and warm (i.e.: 15 minute ride) and set the idle to 1200-1300rpm.  Kerry picture to follow.

"Kerry picture to follow."

Got the pic, but what should I do aftr warm it up and seting the idle.  Also, what are the other items (not idle adjust screw) highlighted for.

I adjusted the idle to around the proper 1.25 in a sort of stuttering/puttering way.  However, when I put the choke on it jumps to 5.  I didn't get a chance to ride it yet so I'm not sure how the adjustment impacted the overall feel.

O.k., what we did is set the idle so we can eliminate that as a problem.  So far, your bike should be fine; even with the 5k rpm with the choke on.  Actually, you should back off the choke a little at a time to keep it between 3k to 4k, on warm-up.  How does the bike run, otherwise?

1 RPM how can you run it that slow lol i run mine at 1,500 rpm im going to take a wild guess here but could float height be part of the problem?

I don't see how a bump is going to adjust the tangs on the floats, unless the floatbowls where empty.  Unless, you're infering they were off before that?

I vote that some debris got jostled loose, floated or flowed, and got stuck in one of the needle seats.  Open the floatbowl drainscrews and set the petcock to Prime, for a few seconds and flush the contaminants out of the floatbowl.

So I drained the floatbowls for a few seconds.  I also adjusted the air fuel mixture screw after reading through some previous posted topics.  The bike would stall when I would come to a quick stop and kind of not want to take off when I gave it gas.

However, after making the adjustments stated above, it seems to be running fine again.  I'd like to that everyone who has helped.  If I come across any more problems, I will be sure to post.
