Hi
I was just wondering if any of you gs'ers are from Newfoundland or have travelled to Newfoundland. I am planning a trip there (not on the gs- we are flying and renting a car). Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you had advice as far as places to check out. We fly into St. John's and then will rent a car. The car rental is quite expensive per kilometer, so that may limit our travel area. Anyways, if any one has any advice, that would be great and if not, happy riding.

I spent some time in St.John,s it,s a fun city,it helps if you like to drink. There are all kinds of things to do.If you want to do the tourist thing stop at one of the tourist info centers(1 in the airport)they got all kinds of suggestions. There are lots of whale watching trips avai.,people that don't live near the ocean seem to like that.I would suggest seeing signal hill (first trans atlantic message sent from there)and Cape Spear, that is the most easterly point of land in North America.Mainly its just fun walking around the streets at night seeing the sights.Bring some warm clothes though ,just got off the phone from a guy in St.John's, he says the temp. at night drops to around 2 degrees.Oh yah you gotta go to one of the bars downtown and asked to be (screatched in),that will make you a honorary Newfie!Have fun!
You might want to check around for the car rental. I know here in Halifax you can rent them for a fixed rate with unlimited kilometres within the maritimes. I would've thought they'd have something similar over there as long as you stayed on the island.
A couple months ago a friend and I rented a Mustang GT from Budget and did the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. It was only like $50/day plus $20-something for insurance. I was a little concerned cuz we put over 1300kms on it in three days, but they still only charged us the flat rate.

Thanks Trexster and JohnNS for the advice. I'll check out Cape Spear and Signal Hill and I'll give Budget a call. So far all the car rental places that I have contacted limit your kilometers to 100k a day and 25 cents a km after that (I've tried Hertz, Enterprise, and some others).
My wife and I drove to Newfoundland a few years back. Took the ferry to Port aux Basques and drove around the island, coming back from Placentia Bay. If you like history and have the time to drive, go over to the west coast and up to L'anse aux Meadows - first European settlement (Viking) in North America. Incredible scenery all up the west coast around Gros Morne National Park - and not nearly the number of tourists you find most places.
Around St. John's is really nice too. There was a great whale watching place just south of the city at Bay Bulls - O'Brien's. Cape Spear and Signal Hill are both must sees if you like history too. We didn't get there but south east of St John's is Cape St. Mary's or something like that which has some incredible scenery and wildlife too. If you drive down around the Avalon Peninsula there numerous are caribou herds too.
The people in Nfld are really friendly overall. As an aside, you should rent a recent movie called "Rare Birds". Fun movie - filmed right beside Cape Spear.
Enjoy the trip!
