Title: It stil will not start
Post by: 96GsNyc on September 11, 2006, 06:27:17 PM
I have a 96 Gs with 11 k on it. I turns but will not start. If It is jumped by a car and allowed to turn and turn for more than 5 minutes it starts. but will not start on its own before the battery is drained.

Full tank
Good Compression,
New Spark Plugs
Oil Just Changed. ( I got it started this weekend after I changed the fuel lines, and changed the oil)
New Fuel lines, filters, Petcock
New Air Filter
Battery Filled w. water.
Fuel tank drained and cleaned. ( there is rust in it, but no sediments floating around)

And it turns turns and almost starts. Sometimes Its starts after a few turns, but dies within seconds and doesn't start again.
The carbs appear to be good, Once I got it started this weekedn it ran really well with the new lines, and oil.

One question where do the two vaccum coming out of the carbs go? I got one(left) connected to the petcock. one to the just out lose near the battery(left)
and one to the gas tank(center). Just want to make sure I got those right. And what size fuel lines should I use. Im using 5/16s all around now.

I'm lost  Any advice would be apreciated.
Thanx, Diego.

Fuel, compression, spark.  Find out which is your problem and then go from there.  There is only 1 vacuum line on the carbs.  It runs from the inside of the left carb to the nipple on the petcock.  "one to the just out lose near the battery(left)" - I don't know what that means but it doesn't sound right.  "and one to the gas tank(center)" - That's definitely not right.  The nipple on the bottom of the tank is a drain and is supposed to have a hose that runs down to the right side of the engine cover.  It's not connected to the carbs in any way.

Your first step is to consult a diagram and make sure you've got all the hoses properly routed.  It sounds like you have some problems there.

There you go, its the fuel hose routing digram.  If you are confortable with doing it, clean your carbs.  Make sure all the jets are not clogged.  I just bought a bike and it was running rough and it was one little jet in one carb that made it so no fuel came through.  It sounds like fuel so you can prob just clean the carbs and it should solve it.  Also make sure all your hoses are mounted right and everything cause if they arent then that would possibly make it not run.  But to check your spark, pull the plugs out and keep them connected to the wire and touch the threads to your engine or frame, somewhere metal to ground it and see if there is spark.  Good luck.

I had the same problem with my bike.  It tried to turn over and just drained the battery.  All I did was clean the carbs and replace fuel lines, and clean the tank.  That got it running, but it did take a lot of time.  I'm still not done with it cause now im rejetting (just something to look forward too)

Are you using the choke when trying to start it until it warms up?

Yeah i had a broken choke cable that im still in the process of fixing, but i made some modifications (zip tie) and used that to start mine.  Maybe that would work for you as well
