Hello all,
I was just pipe dreamin' again and was curious what kind of horsepower you can expect from a list of modifications, if anybody knows?
I know stock the bike is said to put out 52hp at the crank.
bigger bore
11:1 compression
cams, not the most aggressive grind but somewhere in the middle ground
bigger carbs
and then a few little things, neck the valves, polish the ports, a nice exhaust and air filter.
My guess is somewhere around 65? Does anybody have numbers from a possible race bike?

lee's bike with 3000-5000 worth of engine mods.....68....cheaper to buy lee's bike...he wants 2800 for it i think

I was just thinking of putting a bit of money into the GS over getting a new bike because it would be the same for insurance, and anything else my rates jump to 5000 a year.
Just buy a faster bike. It really isn't worth trying to hop these things up beyond filter, pipe, and jets. Once you get going any faster, the suspension, brakes, and tires all need to be upgraded, and for what you spend on all that, you could have gotten a real nice bike.
On the other hand, if you want to keep the bike for insurance rates, it could be fun to swap in a different engine if you found a good deal on one. Cut, weld, chop, weld, you're done :thumb:

I do, I do, South Central Ontario. I was planning on doing the suspension and all that too, mabye a Katana front end..I looked into buying an FZR400 and my insurance would go from 2500, to 5500, which doesn't really work for me. Mabye I'll look into an SV but I doubt its any cheaper. I got a new job and I need something to waste my money on O0. I would be doing the suspension first anyways, I was just curious as to what kind of power people pull out of these things with mild tuning.

Remember the dyno chart for Annie's 99 GS500 with V&H pipes, K&N filter, and Dynojet kit, gave about 43 HP:

All the road tests over the years showed about 40 HP for the stock GS measured at the rear wheel:

Note the data for the V&H bike with 555cc displacement. Brings performance up to Ninja 500 level. If you want 50 HP at the rear wheel, get the EX500 Ninja. :laugh:

Well, in defence of my poor GS... It was in need of a tune up. :icon_confused: New plugs probably got me another 2 HP. :laugh:
