Title: 5w40 and 5w50 any experience?
Post by: ducati_nolan on September 17, 2006, 12:16:57 AM
I've seen some 5w40 oil it's a mobil synthetic commercial oil (like delo and rottela) that dosen't have the energy conserving marking on it. I've also seen a 5w50 castrol syntec that dosen't say energy conserving. I was wondering if anyone has used any 5w40 or 5w50 oils, and if they have experienced any clutch slippage. I don't want to start an oil debate but just want to hear about others experiences with these oils.
Thanks

P.S. I have seen 10w40 oils that have the energy conserving stamp implying that it has friction modifiers, so be sure to check when you buy your oil.

I use a 10W-60 synthetic motor oil.

HAve never had any oil burning problems. Takes slightly longer to warm up in the dead of winter but runs like a awsome in summer.

The suzuki's are designed for 10w40. I use walmart standard 10w40 made by accel. used to cose $74 cents, then 88, then 95, and now its freaking pushing $1.25. Still the cheapest and best oil IMHO. Its SE rated. Will send out enough zinc to clog up your oxygen sensor in a new car.
Cool.

I also use the Shell Rotella 5W-40.  No problems and I figure the air cooled GS could use the extra protection of a synthetic.

Just changed the oil last night with the rotella synthetic 5w40. I replaced the oil pan gaskett to cause I'm tired of seeing drips under the thing. It's getting colder here, so I'm hoping it will give better protection for the startup.

I have 23,000 miles on the thing and will probally swich th 5w50 when it warms back up.

hahaha.

I love the stories people have about synthetic oils being so bad.

rangerbrown, have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe the Synthetic oil doesn't burn because its a better product? Or is that impossible to believe?
