Well, the tank on my poor '96 has just about had it. Although not rusted through, it was so full of dirt and chunks of rust that I don't know if it's worth trying to clean up. The bike only has 1100 miles on it, but has been sitting out-doors with a couple of the fuel lines disconnected, and no gas in the tank. I need a tank in decent shape to use to get the bike running, and I'm having it painted anyway, so I figured a used tank that wasn't beat up would be a worthwhile investment.
What's a "normal" or average price to pay for one of these buggers? I'm tempted by one on Ebay currently, but is it even worthwhile to pay $200 for a used tank that will need a Kreem job, or just splurge and pay $350 for a new one?
I'll post some pics of the bike+ tank up later.. these posts are far more interesting with eye candy
This tank just sold on eBay for $61 + 30 shipping:
Wow! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=320026658230&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT)

The pricey one is the only one that will work on my bike. That, and all the others are dented, which I honestly have no interest in. Bah!
Dents dont bother me. Nothing that one of my buddies cant fix with some FG and bondo O0 :thumb:

hehe j/k
What's a kreeme or other tank sealant kit go for? If it's $40 or $50 I'd just try to clean up and seal the old one. I think that they have some pretty harsh chemicals that should do a pretty good job of cleaning it up. Before using the kit, you can get most of the stuff out by putting a little gas/solvent in there with some rocks or nuts and bolts and shaking it up. For what the replacement tanks go for it's worth a shot. Just my $0.02
I just checked JC Whitney and the kreem kit is only $32.99 and it should be enough for a car tank so you could probally do a few bike tanks. Definately worth a shot.
If you screw it up, you will have a bigger problem. You'll have to remove the old creme job which could be PITA and then try it again.
If you're already planning on buying a new tank, who cares if you screw up :dunno_white: you're just back where you started looking for a new tank.
Why would you ever have to remove the kreeme? I could see it plugging up the petcock if you don't remove it, but if you remove it that shouldn't be a prob. I don't know much about it since I've never done it but I like fixing up old bikes and will probally have to use that stuff at some point so I'd like to know what can go wrong?
Not saying you would mess it up,duc. Just ask srinath about a bad kreme job. It can be done....trust me.... O0
I bought the kreme about 2 or 3 weeks ago from my local dealer, it was like 30 or 31 bucks. I have yet to do it.. if you get the kreme make sure you follow the dirrections exactly so u dont pull a srinath :icon_lol:.
I just got a '02 tank on eBay for $25 shipped... It supposed to be in good condition except for a single dent on one side. I got it for a track tank, but I figure with little bit of bondoing, sanding and priming and a cheepie Maaco paint job, I can get the tank as good as new for less than $100.

I saw that one. Luckily I recognized your name and did not bid against you.
I admit I was amazed that I won it for that cheap. Well thank you! :kiss3:

:o WOW.... That's looking pretty rough. First thing you will have to do is clean that bad boy....thoroughly(sp). Then you will have to through some acid or something in there to get rid of the rest of that rust. In all honesty; it looks like cancer and paint is the only thing holding that thing together :icon_confused: Im sure srinath or the other kreme gurus will have hopefully a more positive solution.

Yeah man. I got my '05 tank for $26 shipped and it only had a tiny dime sized ding in it (not even noticeable when I'm riding because my leg covers it up).
Alright, anyone else? I got most of the crap out, but there's a little left. The tank seems okay as far as rot.. It may be thinner than it should be, but it's not going to fall apart with just gas in it. Acid.. maybe, but probably still worth a try.
04-07 tank for sale, blue base color (painted black) take tape and pull up the black paint. i didnt sand the old paint on it so it comes right off
No dice... mine's a '96
it still fits or so i am told
Later tanks are significantly wider.. don't think it works with my seat, or rear plastics. Anyone confirm?
Dont know about the plastics but you definetly have to change the seat. Ask me how I know :icon_rolleyes:
The later seats don't just drop on either, do they? Ahh.. doesn't matter, I'm really not interested in changing all that jazz.. not now anyway. This sucks..
Well, at least the outside of the tank is pretty  but yeah that rust is pretty bad. I still think it's worth a shot trying the kreeme. If you put some rocks or nuts and bolts in there with a little gas and shake it up it will knock some more of the rust out. But yeah.....that's a lot worse than I thought, but give it a shot, a lot cheaper than a new one.
good luck

Tank, seat and plastics go together for 89-00 and 01+. The 01+ tail plastics have 6 different mounting mounts plus a taller grab handle mount.
I have not really checked into mixing them but it would not look right.
