Title: What other mad pursuits are out there?
Post by: Chilly Willy on September 20, 2006, 11:04:35 PM
I am truly inspired by McKenzie's turbines.  They are a work of pure genius.  They embody the spirit of what it means to be a guy to the "T."

We are a pretty motorcycle focused group (how's that for an opening obvious statement).  What I'm wondering is, when you're not working, wrenching, or riding, what else do you enjoy doing?

I like to do open water long distance swimming.  I also like to read voraciously, coach karate and kung-fu, play with my sons, and eat really good food.

What other passions lurk beneath your veneer of motorcycle grease?

I write. A lot. I used to headline the local poetry scene, back when that actually meant something. (Yeah tickets sold out to spoken word events, WTF?)

I'm a published photographer. (No not like NG or anything, but I wish.)

I also fly Ultralights, because they are uber badass.

I drink heavily - I'm still in college so I'm not an alcoholic, just a student.

Also, 5 days a week at the gym unless I get distracted by working on the bike, then its less. I read when the weather sucks. Sometimes I even try to get together with the occasional lady friend if I can find some time - and a someone whose single. I've had a bad track record lately (no mc pun intended) with getting involved with girls who are already spoken for. Oops.

Sex.  I'm always trying to have sex with my wife.

And, boardgames; wargames to be specific: Axis&Allies, Pirates (which I get to play with my nephews!), Risk, History of the World, Ogre/G.E.V., CarWars, Rivets.

Trying to have sex with my wife is one of my hobbies as well. We usually end up doing it doggy style, I'll sit up & beg for a while while she rolls over & plays dead.

Muzzle loading shooting, brewing beer & drinking such beer, working on cars. Watching my boys playing sport, there was one this year but I dare say there'll two next year.

I know what you mean about the racing / kids conflict.  I used to do tournament karate until my boys were born.  Since then, it's been just coaching rather than competing.  Now that they're a bit older, I am looking forward to being more active in the study of martial arts.  My oldest son has just started studying aikido.  I may sign up for lessons so that we can practice together.

What a great way to bond with your boys!

Pandy - Was that verbal swerving skillz, physical swerving skillz, motorcycle swerving skillz, or sexual swerving skillz?

Build solar cells.  If wind wasn't so plentiful in my area that's where I would have started...you can build your own for like $2~3 a pop.  Not very efficient ones, but ones that work...and only cost $2~3 a pop lol.

Also avg wind spd in your area is 7mph...you can turn a minigen in that kind of wind.  If you want to tinker with something I can get you a ready to go kit for $40 (shipped)...has a generator and blades.  It's made for stuff like classroom experimentation with box fans as a source (because students don't go outside anymore  ).  They exceed 150v with a good spin of the shaft, but will only produce about 25ma...which will trickle charge a 12v battery or run all kinds of LEDS and other small stuff.  They're super fun.

Aikido can be extremely time consuming and is essentially useless in self defense unfortunately. It's extremely difficult to learn and takes a lifetime to master (and even then you are still learning). I enjoyed the time I spent studying it though, and typically used it as more of a meditative/relaxation set similar to tai chi, as it is all about flow and balance. If your son is interested in a workable martial arts I'd suggest jiu jitsu. Plus, it sounds awesome when you say, "I know jiu jitsu."

I know.  I spent six months intensively training in Aikido (3 work outs, 5 times a day).  And I agree, as a form of self-defense, it is pretty much useless.  It does augment other forms of martial arts well (never hurts to learn how to take a fall REALLY well), and in my son's case, it helps him develop balance and gross motor skills.  The lack of "real world" applicability began to grate on me so much that I stopped studying.  If I were to go back, it would be something purely just to be able to better practice with my son.

My nidan (2nd degree black belt) is in Goju Ryu karate.  While I enjoyed studying and teaching it, I felt I learned the most about "fighting" during the two years I spent studying Jeet Kune Do gung-fu.  Plus it was entertaining to go to karate tournaments and shift from karate to gung-fu during the middle of a sparring round.  Kind of like being bilingual, it provided me with more opportunities.

Now all I do is swim and am looking for a way to get back into studying martial arts.  Aikido might be a nice transition after a few years away.

Sorry to all for the long digression.  It is really cool to see what talents are out there.  Plus, I used the "doggy-style" line with my wife tonight.  She thought it was hilarious!

Self-editing--"three work outs a day, five days a week."  The worst work outs were the 5:00 AM ones--I am SO not a morning person. :icon_razz:

I'm pretty obsessed with playing poker.  I play on the computer.  I play in any house game I can get.  I've played tournaments.  And I recently discovered the no limit cash game at Harrah's.
Next, I'll discover 1-800-BET-SOFF.
