WOW! I got my GS500e! I love it! I can't drive it properly yet, need to pass my test (which is very soon!), but I did take it for a quick test drive to see what it was like, and I loved it! I can see why everyone likes this bike! It's a little rusty around the edges, but thats only cosmetics to be honest!
Welcome to the zoo!

That's like me a few months ago...
Let me be the first to tell you that using the search button will save you lots of flaming. (I know from experience. And even when you use it you STILL get flamed, so NM, some people are just nuts)
Wear your gear. I was when I went down and WOW. Good stuff. (I don't always heed my own advice though so :p )
Congrats on the E. I have one too. Fairing are for poseurs. (I kid. I kid. OW STOP HITTING ME!)
If you bomb the test the first time (I did, but I wasn't on the GS, I was on a 80's ZL1000, WAY too much bike for a newb.) Just get some tennis balls, chop them in half and set up a course similar to the test and PRACTICE. (Lot easier when I can touch the ground on my GS!)
Don't worry when a Busa smokes you on the straights.
Use the PRIme setting on your petcock when on the freeway or similar road. (Saves headaches)
Listen to Alpha and Kerry and LimaXray and a few others. But everyone else is full of poo.
Don't do wheelies. (Ok I don't heed that one either.... Actually you know what scratch that one and replace with "when you are ready")
Don't upgrade your bike to keep up with your friends or whatever. Go to the twisties (I'm going to get flamed on this, but :p ) and don't ride to be ahead, ride to ride. This is how I ride with the biggest, baddest bikes out there and show them. "It's not the bike, it's the rider."
But the biggest thing I can say is. When you feel your heart racing ease off, keep that steady calm heart rate. Breathe, in and out slowly. This is how I ride, and trust me, it's more fun when you don't have tunnel vision.
Hi Adam! Welcome to the forum! You'll enjoy the GS500. It is truly a great all around machine that is usually... extremely dependable. Feel free to "join in" any discussions! We're always having a lively time of some sorts! Good Old Mr. Wilson
