Title: Quick mirror question
Post by: Chilly Willy on September 28, 2006, 05:25:13 PM
Ok, I've installed ebay CRG knock-off bar end mirrors on my bike and have taken the stock ones off.  I know that the stock mirrors are 10mm, but I'm wondering if there is some sort of insert / bolt I can put in the sockets to keep them from rusting out?

Ok, I just got back from the hardware store, so I can answer my own question.  You can plug the mirror sockets with short 10mm 1.25 thread bolts.  They were pretty hard to find and I would like to see if I could find something that would look a little nicer.

There are snap in cover caps, typically they fit in socket head screws (allen head screns). They do have a round base so they could easily fit in a threaded hole. I have seen chrome ones in Ace Hardware stores and cruisers/Harleys use them as well.

Another option is to use a rubber nipple cover. Normally they fit over a threaded bolt but they can be pushed into a hole. Easily found at most hardware stores.

Thanks,

I like the idea of a rubber plug to keep the threads from rusting out.  They would look better than the short bolts I currently have installed.
