Title: fuel selection problem
Post by: rangerbrown on September 28, 2006, 06:52:18 PM
ok heres one for all of you. bike will only run in the pri positon. ran fine all day yesterday and today from ashville NC to charlestion sc, thn form charleston sc to cola sc. 700 some odd miles 1000 total sence the jeting, pods, sprocket, and fork job.

but on the way home form work it didnt slowy die (as if out of fuel) it died as if no spark. so after coasting and geting out of the way (90mph)  so i set it to prime and got it running, and then while driveing put in the run. it started to die, then back to prime, and then to resv and it died so i left it in prome and got it home

so far no loose hoses at all. cant under stand this one. full gas tank by the way

other than that 56mpg with rejet and 14 t counter shaft sprocket

sounds to me like it's broken...the petcock, I mean.  Get a new one or swipe one off another bike temporarilly and see if the problem persists.  I say this because you are specifically relating your problems to the fuel petcock.  If problems were persistant regardless of petcock position I would suggest inspecting the ignition system.

yea it been really weard, it fuel related.

the bike has been ruinging fine till a few days ago it will start acting funny spertering
and all. so i would go to reserve, and it would be fine but its full of fuel. then reserve started doing the save thing.

but still it was ruing fine nothing out of the ordanary, till now it just doesnt get fuel at all, (O) only in the prime postion it get fuel.

another question. the 04's whats the gal the tanks will hold? yesterday i put in 5.1 gal damn :dunno_white:

It is a Vaccum Operated Petcock. You probably either have a Leak in the Diaphram OR in the Vaccum Hose to the Carb.Running the Bike on Prime will not hurt anything it just Bypasses the Diaphram Assembly.I wouldn't want to leave it on Prime though incase the Needles in the Carbs Stick open.

Yeah, check the vac hose to make sure that it hasn't come loose or cracked. If that isn't the problem, just ride it on prime and put it to ON when parked. The only problem with this is that prime always feeds from the reserve (I think) so when you run out of gas... you're walking. So pay atention to your millage.

Definitely +1 on the vacuum line suggestion.  Your bike seems too new to have a busted petcock.  Trace the vacuum line from the petcock to the carb and see what you can find.
