Title: LUBE!
Post by: serbianstunna on October 04, 2006, 09:00:05 AM
what do you guys use to lube your chains?  I've been using 40 wight oil every 600 miles, and it works, but it sucks to clean up after.  is there a better chain lube, and how much does it cost?  Thanks!

If you search 'chain lube' you will get 12 pages of responses.  Just read the first two pages, the rest are duplicates.  All good info.

I use Maxim chain wax, it seems to stay relativly clean and resists fling off.

I used to use the Maxim chain wax, good stuff, easy to spray on.  Kinda hard to clean off overspray buildup on the sprocket hub (hint: don't overspray, use the red tube/nozzle).  I'm currently testing out Dumonde motorcycle o-ring conditioner and chain lube.  So far, so good.  Not as easy to apply (squeeze bottle), but easier to clean.  Still get the spots from flingoff.

I used to use some spray lube but it was real messy.  I bought this other stuff, its like spray wax, from belray.  Works real well and isnt messy.

Maxima Chain Wax and Bel Ray Super Clean are the two best you can buy IMO.

Maxim Chain Wax.  I was surprised how clean this stuff was compared to whatever was on the bike's chain when I got it from the previous owner.  Then again, I could see that kid using anything to lube the chain, whatever was handy so it's hard to say what was on there.

Don't forget to clean the chain first, most people here seem to use WD-40.

WD 40 is a good cleaner but not a good luber for the chains.  It has too many solvents so it cleans well and isnt thick enough to work well on the chain for a prolonged amount of time.  You should use real chain lube.

WD to clean, gear oil to lube.

O-ring chains do not require the same external lubrication like roller chains do.

The manufactiurer of the stock chain for the 05 GS500 just recommended regular cleaning with WD-40. No external lube ir required as it is internally lubricated.

iling your chain can actually cause it to wear faster as it attracts dirt, sand and grit that gets forced between the sproket and the chain.

Two words, Astro glide! Beats ky pants down! Pun intended!
Seriously, wd40 to clean and whatevers at the shop that's cheap. Been told that if you clean and relube often enuff, does matter what you use... But if you have a oring chain, buy 1 witha oring conditioner. Don't want a frizzy oring :)

I can corroborate Galahs' post.

When I first got the bike, it was a regular chain lube.  I noticed that it was attracting more and more gunk (sand, dirt, etc).  We have had this discussion many times before, so I decided to try WD-40 only to clean the chain.

I am VERY happy with the results.  The chain is SOOOOO much cleaner for longer periods of time, although I still clean after 600 miles or after a rain ride.
