Title: FSCKING A.. My bike got hit...... I need help on what to do?
Post by: TheGoodGuy on July 03, 2003, 02:01:45 PM
I was parked at college in a place that I always to park in.

Anyway this professor backed into my bike which fell over on to the Honda Shadow 750 parked next to me.

College police has the records so I didnt exchange any info. This prof is a disabled prof so he was backing out of the disabled parking spot and hit mine.

Basically he hit mine and then my bike fell over.

I am going ot post pictures in a few minutes. But so far the only damage I can see is that I need a new handle bar (assuming it cant be straightend).
I am unsure how to go about this.. this is a prof that i nearly took class with.

What else should I check. There is a slight scratch on the can (small one about a nickel sized on the edge of the can)

Also what kind of handlebars can I get fast.. I need one before monday cause i only take the bike to school.

Manjul

PS: I am reporting it to my insurance just in case even though there is nothing they can fix and I the college police as all teh information about the hit.

here's your chance to get S-M bars! Or drag bars if they're in stock. If they're bent you can still ride with them. I was riding with bent bars for a long time before I realized it...only after I installed the new ones did I realize it!

Why call your insurance-yours will likely go up even though you don't claim anything-bastards. Sort it out with the Prof. Did he cop to it or did he run? Were there witnesses?

Make sure he pays for replacement parts. If he jsut bumped it and knocked it over probably no major damage other than scratches. Make sure he takes responobility for his actions, disabled or not-doesn't matter.

Uh, HE hit YOU.  He should be paying for everything.  Handlebars are relatively cheap, but they're still not THAT cheap.  Get his insurance and get on his ass.  He should also be paying for any damage to that Nighthawk.

The college cops got the info.. so I didnt exchange any info, plus he is a long term prof so I can find him and also the guy had to run to class.

I know my insurance is likely to go up but what the heck I will dump geico probably for someone else. I am goign to look for S-M bars or maybe Drag bars in the few minutes.

I feel bad to make him pay for it. Geico said that the other bikes damage (tank got scratched up by my handle bar and controls) would bypass me and go to the original person who hit me (meaning the prof).

As for riding them, it seems to be rideable. The bar is bent quite badly though. I had to fix the throttle cable as it had come out of its holder. But the brakes seem to be fine, the bike seems to be riding fine too. Funny thing is that the bar bent in the exact place where I suspected a bend in the bar (I dropped it once while trying to get on to the bike).

Any idea on what teh stock bars were (rise / run etc etc). What do I have to look for in a bar? Anything special. How expensive are bars, I assume for a peice of metal it shoudltn be more than 20 - 30 bucks right?

dont do it. your next insurance will look to your history to base their price on. maybe not at first but once you've paid them they'll do a thorough search . Happened to me with my car. Insurance went up after accident, dropped them and got new insurance...you get the picture.

Dont feel bad either-he's at fault and should pay. Be a nice guy and you'll never see your money. Dont be a duck but be firm about repairs...cost and time wise.  Other bike should bypass you anyway also.

check www.flandersco.com for stock bar sizes. they might have stockers in er, stock, or drag bars too in stock. both should run you about $20-$30 as you thought. S-M will run your Prof $130 but you might not want to take advantage of him that way...although you could do without repairing the light scratch on the exhaust (what does that cost-$300 new!) for the bars if you wanted them. You'd have to try mine to see if you even like them.

You're so close to flanders they're sure to have something in stock you could use. My site also has the stock rise, pullback, etc of the stock bar on the S-M page.

Don't sit back and think that nickel sized scratch in the can is OK.  You didn't buy it like that and you shouldn't have to look at it for the rest of your ownership.  He's only going to pay his insurance deductible anyway so get your sh@t fixed right.  You deserve it.

They are going to asses the damage and make you an offer.  Price up all your stuff that you need and see if it covers it and use that as your guide.  You can negotiate with the insurance company.  YOu don't have to just take what they offer.

Okay I got the info for the stock bars from your site.

I think I like Johns Handlebars but I am not sure how comfy they are (he is taller than me and he does have longer arms). Not sure how they ride too. Or should I go for Ape Bars with a greater pull back (similar to stock but with a greater pull back).

I dont want to change anything.. just want to swap the bars so how far can I pull back and rise?. As for the charging the prof the college police said that he will pay for things personally. All he needs is the bill ..  :P

Oh well..

Take it to a dealer for an estimate of the damage he did....include the labor to replace the parts and get DEALER price on the replacement parts for the estimate. If they just cut you the check- fix it yourself and keep some cash for the hassles.

You are no way at fault and shouldn't feel bad about making him pay. DO you think if you damaged his car with your bike he'd go lax on you?

damn flanders is expensive.

I bought some bars that mimmic the stock GS bar info..

It has teh same rise, and pull back but its longer by 1.75".

The bar cost 46 bucks! Ouch. (suzuki costs 85- 95bucks)

I called Cycle Trends and they said it would be 30 bucks.. oh well

If these dont fit then I will go exchange for some drag bars with 15degrees. They were 6 bucks cheaper. The first bar he showed me was with a 5" pullback but I felt I was going to stretch quite a bit.

Anyway pics in the next post..

In my opinion, go get price quotes for anything damaged (bars, exhaust, whatever else got scratched, dinged) and give that to his insurance company.  Take the money and buy replacements online where they are cheaper.  On most bikes, you can get a good aftermarket exhaust system for the price of the list price of the stock one.   :thumb:

humm didnt think of that. I willl look at bar ends.

THe scratch on the can is really fscking small. I used a wet cloth and it disappeared.. its just surface scratch..
not worth replacing.. its on the lower edge.. but i will look into a cobra F1S.

I will get the police report from the college and get that guys insurance info.

that doesn't matter! its damaged compared to previous. you need to include the cost of replacement in your tally to the Prof. you guys can barter if you like but he needs to be given full retail on replacements.

:? scratched? get replacement cost. wasnt scratched before, is now, even if you dont get that fixed, you can still keep the money? , also like they said, if you can do as much of the work for yourself, and keep the labor money as payment.

I talked to a friend of mine and he said since i got teh bars to go ahead and replace them.. and do by calling it a safety hazard (which is true... )

I will post more details and pics of the new bars. I took it for a 30 mile ride at 2am (yes we finihsed it quite late in the night) and it felt awesome. The new bars in the new angle is awesome. My wrists feel good and the controls feel good, best yet it feels much more nimble infact a bit too nimble at times. Looking into a turn with teh new bars seems easier too .

more details in the morning.. its almost 4am here in LA
Title: Accident
Post by: The Buddha on July 04, 2003, 09:08:15 AM
In my accident back in 96...the other driver was at fault and I gave them the option of taking it to a dealer and letting them estimate the damage. They cringed at the thought cos the dealer makes them pay for the estimate if they dont get the job of fixing it. They sais they'll send an estimator to my house...I charged them for storing it and loss of use...it took 10 days for the guy to come. Then with less than $100 in damage they called it a total loss and paid me $1700 (for a bike I paid $800 for 2 years back). If I keep the bike I give up 10%. I belive the GS still has money left in its account...You need to be paid all the $$$$ as per the dealer...and for time you lost use of it cos they were dragging their ass. Not professor anymore...its an insurance company and he wont even hear of how much $$$ they giving you,...Besides its alredy at the insurance company's door due to thye other bike.
Cool.
Srinath.

dunno if this would be a total loss...that's an '01 GS I think he's got...probably upwards of $2700-$2800.  However if ins. would pay $500-$600????  Maybe worth a go for the damages caused...fork out $200 to fix yourself, then pocket the rest...
