Title: You will not believe what the dismantlers are charging...
Post by: V8Pinto on July 03, 2003, 02:34:56 PM
Just came back from the motorcycle dismantler... geez these guys....  This is the second time I have laughed my way out of the place.  The last time I was asking for a 28mm Mikuni carb and they wanted $150!  This time I was asking how much for a used GS500 motor and they said.....

SIX-HUNDRED DOLLARS BARE!!!!!!!

I laughed at the guy and said thanks a lot and he offered that they would beat anybody else's price yadda yadda.....

whatever dude......gimme a break.

Well... they are in business to make money -not friends.

If he can sell one motor for 600$...and he paid maybe 200$ for the whole bike...he's made good money and has a whole bike to work off of now.

He doesn't need a motor... you do ( I assume you do because you asked him about one)..so he's going to try to get the best $$$ he can for an engine.

I've sold sportbike engines for $1500-$2000 with electrics... (CBR's...ZX11's.. etc.). It's whatever the buyer is willing to pay.

Anyway....

You're better off shopping for a parts bike with a good motor. They can usually be found for $500-$700 dollars. We bought a parts bike for the race team and by the time I sold all athe "extra parts" I ended up with a motor and frame for practically nothing.

A guy here in town bought a motot through ebay for $400 last Nov. Add in shipping and you're not too far off the $600.

If you can find a motor I need a runner.  (that will give me a good excuse for a new project with the old motor - I heard Michael Moore got 60HP out of a GS5 rebuild).

I would really like to swap a motor in and go.  I ride nearly every day as my other form of transportation (F150) gets 15mpg.

I am near Sacramento CA and can pick up within a few hundred miles or so (the F150 has two tanks...) hahaha.
