Which do you prefer and why?

Arrrrgggh....Can we add a third option? Both?

I really do like both.

I like the nekkid GS's due to my....erhm...propensity...for falling over... (but not since I lowered my SVS! :P)  :icon_lol:

I like the faired models just because I liked fairings...I'm just not to the point where I trust myself with them yet. ;)

Naked bikes are hotter in my opinion, but it is nice to be able to go over 50mph without taking a huge beating.

Need a third option of naked with windscreen.

No fairing.  Why?  Because, then I can customize it the way I want it.
Because...
I can admire the engine, and the frame.
The ease of access for maintenance.
It attracts less wanted law-enforcement attention, and allows them to concentrate on better things.
It's less attractive to thieves.
It reminds me of when I used to ride my Triumph.
I can actually feel air though all the holes of my perforated leather suit.
Bug guts are easier to hide in the wiring harness.
Crosswinds don't affect me as much.

Fairings just make bikes look fat to me...

But, I love old UJMs...  Mmmmm...  H#nda CB400....  Suzuki GS1000....   Mmmmmm.....

Naked bikes look like real machines, not plastic alien spacecrafts.

All fully-faired bikes look alike. Plastic looks cheap. Plastic with decals looks like a cheap toy. Horrible thing to do to an honest machine.

Well I am going to step out since no one else is.
I like the fairing. When I first was looking for a bike, I wanted a sport bike. Technically the GS is low on the list of real 'Sport' but I like mine.
I like it because:
It looks nice (Though it does stick out more than I like)
It is a bit warmer for me to hide behind the small windshield when it gets cooler.
You actually feel like you are washing something, when you clean it.

Naked:

1. Wind and bugs are part of the experience.
2. Cold day? Reach down and put a glove to the engine!
3. Why hide an engine? Are you ashamed of it or something?

And BTW...

Who decided to put an air cooled engine in an enclosure....?

Umm no I don't Mr. GSF.

Air cooled.

Point me to a radiator on my 1990 and I'll gladly shut the f%$k up.
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?
Post by: makenzie71 on October 11, 2006, 11:08:37 PM
On your "90"?  Your "90" is air cooled.  No one said anything about the E.  I said the "GSF"...and you won't find a radiator on a GSF, either...because GSF's aren't water cooled..

When Suzuki made the GS500F they had concerns over cooling...so they tapped the engine for oil supplies and drains and stuck a f%$king oil cooler under the steering head.  You might not have known this, but that makes the bike liquid cooled.

~portion edited because it's open to debate...rest is fact.~
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?

mak said LIQUID COOLED, not water cooled. he likes to play with the words, using a term not used to describe an OIL cooled engine. If manufacturers say OIL cooled, then thats what it is. Liquid cooled is usually used interchangeably with water cooled...

not in mak's world. oil cooled = liquid cooled. water cooled=water cooled. the F is oil/liquid cooled, just not water cooled.

got it?

(and Mak, the E's arent liquid cooled just because they have oil in them (the 2 strokes do too), the oil isnt used as a cooling agent in the E's, just as a lubricant. so technically they're air cooled.
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?
Post by: makenzie71 on October 11, 2006, 11:12:31 PM
I thought the E's used some trickery to regulate oil flow?

And I don't know of any 2-strokes that have oil running through the jug...and I know they don't have oil in the head.

Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?
Post by: CirclesCenter on October 11, 2006, 11:47:30 PM
Yeah that was my point, sticking a air cooled motor into an enclosure necessitated the Oil cooling solution.

My E doesn't need it.
Hence why I prefer nakedness.

But under Mak's logic we could just say:

It's air cooled because it ingests cool air that cools the head...

Or it's gasoline cooled because the cool gas cools the combustion chamber...

Anyways I'm in a critical thinking class and I realize from all the "critical" shaZam! we do most of it is just splitting words down the middle because english is not specific enough.

Actually intake charges tend to be similar to carb/manifold temps...so no, not really.
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?
Post by: CirclesCenter on October 12, 2006, 12:04:12 AM
Which are cooler than cylinder head temps....

I think....

But isn't that part of the reason you see those C02 kits for drag cars?
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?
Post by: makenzie71 on October 12, 2006, 12:40:19 AM
drag cars?  no.  That's for increased compression.  Wetters on turbocharged cars are for cooling the intake charge...and increased compression.

I prefer the GS in naked form as I think the fairing kit looks like an afterthought (which it is) and doesn't quite suit the bike.
Title: Re: GS500: Which do you prefer?

My answer would be both. Its sort of like Coke or Pepsi, or do you prefer Plain M&M's or Peanut M&M's, or some people say Cucumber's taste better Pickled.  I believe that variety is the spice of life, and I like to switch things up because I tend to get tired of the same old things. And as we entered the era of Bling-Bling Suzuki had sort of come to realized this about the GS and designed a fairing in a way that was cost effective, and that would help appeal the "Ole GS" to a wider market, Suzuki only screwed up when they limited the GS too only the one USA "F" version , but we still continue to customize to our own individual tastes just as always, but to me naked, or faired, the GS will never really be a great street-fighter, or supersport bike, but only a great street capable bulletproof 487cc motorcycle that's easy to maintain, and easy to afford, and can still put a little smile on your face when you get the chance to crack open that throttle. The only thing that will probably hold true for all of us is that we like our bike's, because there ours......

minimalism has its advantages:
NO FAIRING REMOVAL TIME to do work = an advantage as quantities of time are valuable to me.

I like the wind, I like to fight it. Makes me feel like I earned my spot on the bike.

Less weight = go fast, in my head mostly as I rarely break the speed limit. My home grinder is on its 3rd disc this year.  GRIND WHAT IS VISUALLY STUPID till it is acceptable then grind some more.

oh yea I suck at spelling and grammar.
