Title: My new exhaust...
Post by: Turd Ferguson on October 30, 2006, 03:38:24 PM
I decided it was time to replace the stock muffler.  While I did want a bit more sound, I was mainly wanting to improve the looks of the bike.  I am not a fan of the stock muffler.

After much searching, I found that Hindle makes a perforated-core style muffler called the "Stealth".  Everything I read claimed that it was only slightly louder than stock but gave good performance.

Dennis Kirk happened to be selling a carbon fiber example of the Hindle Stealth muffler on eBay, and at $130, how could I lose?  My good friend Srinath had a flange sent my way and in just a few days, I had a new exhaust system on my bike.

The muffler is of extremely high quality.  I would even go so far as to say that the fit and finish is much better than the carbon fiber Wileyco that I used to have (though I never installed it).  The flange from Srinath fit great and everything bolted together without any fuss.

The sound is just as advertised, just slightly louder than stock.  It gives a deep bassy rumble at lower RPM's and a nice tone when cruising.  Upon hard acceleration, the pipe lets out a healthy bark.

I recorded a short (crappy) video.  The video gives a decent idea of how the exhaust sounds, but it is much deeper sounding in person.

http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c391/KSUDanimal/?action=view&current=DSCN2703.flv

The muffler is oval, so it doesn't stick out nearly as far as the Wileyco or other round mufflers.  It looks a bit less...goofy in my opinion.

By the way, I must have cut at least 30 lbs from the bike...you would never believe how heavy the stock muffler is until you take it off.  Unreal!

Thanks to Srinath for a high quality flange!

Hahaha, I've gotten a few comments on that...

That would be a Triumph Daytona 675.  Not my bike, just something I found on the internet.

I'd jump in and drown myself if my Ducati ever ended up like that.

Exhaust looks great...
Looks like you need to put that wider rim and tire to use...massive chicken strips :icon_lol:

Very nice.  Turd, would you mind adding it to the exhaust section of the wiki?

Those aren't chicken strips, the strips are long gone.  Those are marks since the last time I washed the bike.

Yeah, Sanjay I don't mind adding to the Wiki, I love the resource you have created!

i agree with darrel,  that looks really good

why add redundant info to everything
a muffy is a muffy
installing a scorpion/hindle/yosh/w-co/or whatever is all the same
make flange or adaptor pipe
weld or clamp above fabrication on
install muffy
pretty simple

Very nice.  Turd, would you mind adding it to the exhaust section of the wiki?

this

yes the internet is endless but also full of useless repeated info
do a search for something you actually know.... with simple search words
and see if you actually find it

Gotcha, you were refferring to the wiki comment.

Yeah I have another bike.  At this point...I'm thinking I might end up keeping both.  I may sell the GS in the spring, but I'm pretty attatched to the friggin thing.

Wait...didn't you sell the Ducati?  What have I missed?  In an earlier post, you were talking about making a grand in profit.  Did the deal fall through?

You're right about the installation routine - it's pretty much the same for all of them.  The wiki page is more to inform people about the kinds of exhausts, where to get them, how much they cost, etc.  And if special fabrication info is needed, then it's easy to add.  Beats typing "exhaust flange" into search and wading through 7 pages of posts...

Take a look at the exhaust page and you'll see what I mean.

Does a carbon fiber muffler run cooler than something made out of metal like the stock exhaust?
Title: Re: My new exhaust...
Post by: The Buddha on October 31, 2006, 04:47:27 PM
It heats up later and more than likely to a lower temp ... but I doubt there is anything to gain other than weight and looks ... OK the things sometimes sounds less tinny ...
Cool.

The flange from Srinath fit great and everything bolted together without any fuss.

What flange are you talking about?

Srinath... how much?  :)

The "flange" is probably the most talked about thing on this site.  Do a quick search up top.

And yeah, the deal fell through for the sale of my Ducati (thank God).  The guy got fired the day before we were going to meet up.

Flanges are like Manhattan real estate ... they not making any more of it ... so its going to go up forever ... its now so rare that it is now worthy of the centerpiece dislay at the Googleim mausoleum ... where artsy chicks can pay $100 to have a 1 minute glance at it ... But ...
Its Yours for $40 and shipping ... buy now before it turns into a pumpkin ...
BTW Turd ... post a link to the can of yours.
Cool.

I have yet to see another can just like mine on ebay, so there is no link.  The Srinath flanges work with any can that is a 3-bolt design for a GSX-R from the late nineties.

Definitely right up there with the best I've seen on a GS!!!

I have been looking for a different can so thanks to you Turd I researched hindle and found they are fairly popular.  So I searched and found

Yeah, looks great!  Just remember, that is the "Super Sport" model muffler.  It has a 2" perforated tube instead of the 1 3/4" that mine has.  I have not heard one in person, but I'm sure it would be pretty loud.

It also appears that the bolt pattern is different than the GSX-R mufflers.  If you get a Srinath flange, you will have to re-drill the holes.  If you are having a shop custom make you a flange, no worries!

I have a Vance & Hines exhaust system that I almost have to remove to get at the drain plug and that I do have to remove to take out the oil filter.  :2guns: Makes the bike sound nice though.
