Title: Converting a GS500E/S back to naked form?
Post by: TobyR on November 02, 2006, 04:17:21 AM
Hi,

I have a 1995 GS500E/S, that at the moment has a hideous front fairing on it that I want to get rid of (It was like that when I bought it)

I have front indicators, and the mounting ears that look like they go onto the forks, plus I've ordered a couple of screws that attach the headlight to the ears from sparesdirect.

At the moment the headlight is mounted behind the front fairing with some sort of custom bracket.

My question is, how do I get the mounting ears onto the front forks? Do I need to remove the top yoke? And if so, are there any precautions I should take, and do I need a torque wrench?

First post by the way :D

Woops, forgot you said.

Do I remove all 3 bolts or just slacken the two fork ones? And how tight do I do them back up again?

I've ordered geniune headlight bolts to go on the ears, theyre sitting on my desk now.

I like ordering parts, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy LOL

Cheers Hmmmz.

Easiest way (in my book) is not to actually remove the triple but to loosen the clamping bolts on top and bottom triple and slide the fork down far enough so you can insert the "ears"

I'm not the best at not breaking things, is it quite a hard job?

I didn't think so. You'll have to support the bike under the headers or weigh it down at the back to lift the fork up. Check with brake line / spedo cable clearance; you may need to loosen something there if they don't allow enough leeway.

I see, so basically the clamps act like collars that wrap round the fork and hold it in place?

Thanks,

Toby

Exactly.

you could slide the forks down, but you would either have to take off the wheel. or park it above a step so the wheel has some where to go when you slide the forks down.
i found undoing the yoke was the easiest option, loosen off the 2 clamp bolts and undo the stem bolt completly.
its a 10 minute job if that.
you'll be pritty hard pressed to break some thing :D

Thanks, I will have a look at some fiche later :)

Does the stem bolt need to be torqued? Or just tight? As I can imagine it affects the head bearings?

Could someone please reply with a diagram of how the ears connect to the headlight?

I think I have all the bits I need (The fork tubes, rabbit ears, ordered 2 genuine bolts and nuts for the headlight)

Am I all set?

shaZam!,

Looks like there's 2 weird things that go in between the nut and bolt inside the headlight.

Lets hope they're still there.

Those two weird things hold the cables in place inside your headlight bucket.  I wouldn't say they're crucial, but they do make things a bit easier when removing your headlight (to change a bulb, install a modulator, etc.).

Can someone please advise me what size spanner I need for the stem bolt and the clamps? The clamp bolts look like allen heads.

Cheers,
