Title: Does the GS500 have soft forks?
Post by: Alphamazing on November 06, 2006, 01:26:43 PM
The insurance adjuster says my RaceTech springs add no value to the bike.

Do you think the GS500 has too soft fork springs?

Nothing you do aftermarket will increase the value... Not even an $800 exaust.

got to agree with scott, it doesn't matter what you do to the bike you'll never increase the value in the eyes of insurance companies, in certain cases you will probly devaue the bike (as its no longer standard, and sometimes they won't pay out as its a "modified bike" and voided their policy. its sounds stupid i know, (and i doubt new springs would come in that class but ive heard of guys voiding there policys by having a power commander, and another for changing the front end from the stock set to usd's... both ended up getting the money in the end but it was a bit of a fight to get it.

but yeah the gs does have stupidly soft front forks :D

My logic for the mods I have done is that I have corrected the standard issues people have with their GSes. From soft front forks to skinny rear wheels, I have made a diligent effort to (for the most part) tackle only those problems that most owners would want to change anyways. Lackluster suspension, better braking performance, wider tire selections, etc...

it depends i thought... I've got my car that has a bewteen 4 and 5 grand into it at this point and I've had it appraised(with recipts) at a much higher value then just book or retail.  I would imagine my bike will be the same way... could be a New York thing maybe?  I dunno.

some insurance companies wont cover aftermarket at all...some will if you can prove cost/payment...

Just rip the parts out and sell 'em.

But I might buy the bike back, so what would be the purpose?

Looks like they aren't going to get me the amount I need. I'll be buying the bike back.

Honestly dude, I'm not surprised.  Rarely do insurance deals work out in the end.  My medical insurance is still trying to stick a large object up my rectum.  I personally choose to leave that to the doctors.

I think the GS does have relatively soft forks, even though I am relatively new to bikes, I've bottomed mine out before accidentally.

Insurance deals tend to work better when you have an attorney. I got what I paid for my 89 plus twice what I paid for damaged gear (of which the jacket is still usable!) Medical bills paid and further threats of litigation are forthcoming for my pain and suffering. Just gotta figure out what not walking for a week and not walking normal for a two months is worth.. not to mention the time I missed riding my bike and other various things.

Wow, sorry to hear about such a bad accident.  Sadly, accidents like this tend to come back and haunt people in the later years.  Hope all is well now.

The only time you might get more $$$ is if you recently changed the engine...  Like completely brand new.

This is what happened to my '93 Chevy Blazer when it got totalled...

The insurance guy: "We'll give you $3500 after the $500 deductible"

Me: "The truck just had a brand new engine put in"

The insurance guy: "Do you put it in?"

Me: "No. The PO did for XXX amount of money"

The unsurance guy: "Normally we don't pay out for that, but because it was fairly recently (a year), I'll give you $4200 after the $500 deductible."

Me: "Thank you"

Yeah, I realize that and that is something that I need to figure into it too. My knee was bruised up nasty with a lump the size of half a damn orange for along time... whole inner and back of my thigh was black, purple and blue down to my ankle... lucklly no broken bones which was quite a miracle since it hit right by my kneecap which I've heard only takes like 18lbs/sq' of pressure to damage it. 400 pound bike at 30mph landing on my knee hurt like an S.O.B. seems much better now (3 months later) but still can't lean on it sometimes, gets sensitive to touch and there is about an 1" where I can't feel anything, not to mention discomfort and pain on and off from time to time..... still need time to heal and hopefully the long term damage is minimal, although either way it will be figured into any type of settlement.

I feel much better than before, I can walk now.. and even though I am currently vehicleless, I am in the process of getting my GS running again and the insurance money is going towards a tranny rebuild in my Exploder. Other money from damages will go towards a new bike, hopefully another newer model GS. My fiancee was sweet enough to loan me her Suzi DR-Z and I've had so much help from everyone around me, getting rides from my dad and co-workers, I've been blessed throughout the hardships I've encountered.

i got lucky with my accident. yeah, bike is messed up, but i can fix that. I'm just glad my only injuries are healed after only a month... road-rashed knee is already a scar thanks to the balm i use for new tattoos and my broken pinky was ignorable after 2 weeks.

How did the gear you were wearing hold up?

You were wearing gear, right?
You know...helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, PANTS...
