Seriously, now that I have your attention, my GS is backfiring BAD. It has been sitting for exactly 3 months since my accident. It ran fine even after the accident, but then sat for 3 months. I cleaned out the carbs and replaced the battery and now instead of starting it's backfiring... :dunno_white: what gives? The plugs are only like 7 months old, but they look black (could be because I backfired it 4 or 5 times before checking them) Does it have anything to do with the carb cleaner??? WTF is going on? Help!!
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
-DG
PS - Big flame shooting out of the can...... very loud noise...... no start... confused :dunno_white:
Awesome, take a video of it! No but really, coils maybe? I had a cb900 that was shooting flames and it had a bad coil so it was pumping fuel out through the exhaust and would ignite there. But that bike was a 1980 so I dont know.
BUMP! HELP!!!!
94Suzi, how would I check the 'coils'?? I am not a big engine person and am pretty new to it. I try to start, once or twice it studders a little like it might start, but quickly dies back (very quickly, not even close to actually starting), basically it's shooting flames and black smoke out the can...
It used to have a leaky line, could it be some of the gas got into the engine and is making it do that???? I added oil because even though there is no leak, the damn thing was empty:dunno_white:
PS- I'll take a video of it
Seriously though too, HELP!! ANYONE!!!! :o
i had pritty bad back fires on the gs when one of my pod filters had come off,
check that your airbox has no leaks and you air filter is correctly installed
The airbox is fine, the filter is installed properly. There may be a leak on the rubber boots that connect the carbs to the engine, could that be the cause?? I tried using black silicone to close those up.... I have run the bike before with no air filter in it (don't ask) and it never backfired before. I'm confused!
:dunno_white:
Why do you think it is leaking between the carbs and the motor? You should be able to tighten the clamps down, unless your boots are damaged.
If it is leaking, yeah that could cause a lean condition which can lead to backfiring in some cases.

I dont know anything about carbs but I think if I did I'd suggest something like yur floats are stuck open? Try putting some carb cleaner in the tank, check your lines, check the pods like you said and the fasteners from the air box. Might as well pull those plugs and check to see if they are all gunked up, they r only 5 bux a piece. Check your throttle cable and choke maybe they are stuck or something. I'm no pro but thats what I'd do first.

Oh ok maybe you added too much carb cleaner, might as well drain and start anew. Pull those plugs I have a feeling they have something to do with it. If they sat just 7 mmonths they could easily be funked up, just go buy some new ones you'll use them eventually anyway. Install them nd use some new gas nd check it out. Besure you didnt over fill the oil either.

Backfiring usually is an indication that something's amiss with ignition. You get combustible mixture (obviously, since it even ignites in the exhaust), so I'd ignore carburetion for the moment. What about the charge status of the new battery?
I had a backfire problem and it turned out that my coils are fine but it was the Ignition Module that was sending poor spark. Replaced it with a salvage one from eBay for $60 and haven't had a problem.
Change the plugs and make sure they are something besides champions. :thumb:
I agree with many of the posts here. It is probasbly an ignition problem in which one of the cylinders isn't fireing and the gas from that cyl is shooting throught the exhaust, then when the other one goes and the exhaust valve opens the flame is igniting the gas in the exahust and causing your monster backfire. Had that happen to me a long time back with my cavalier. Check the spark on both cylinders by pulling the plug, ground the threaded part to somthing metal (frame) and holding the wire with the plug inserted like it is still in the engine see if you get nice spark. Repeat for the other side. If one side is weak or not sparking then you know which side of the ignition system to look at.
PS: Champions will work fine and in some cases better than the stock plugs (NGK)
PPS: Spark color should be blue, if it is yellow-orange to red then this is indicative of a weak spark.
Thanks for all your help guys! I had a feeling it was the plugs when I got up this morning so I stopped by and bought some Champions (it's all they had, sorry Jughead!) and put them in, it started up on the second crank! Seems to run ok now, just need to see if the forks are worth a damn. could be bent, or could be decent, but if so I need seals. Thanks for all the advice! (although I barely read it right now and I got it started like an hour ago!!!) But seriously, thanks!

glad to hear the little beast is running again, now get those forks fixed :thumb:

Well I just looked at mine and they had cracks in them. So they were corroded on the inside. Just make sure all the connections are not loose and that everything is hooked up. But everyone else is saying carb issues? My zx6r shot flames but its cause it had a stuck valve so I would flow out the exaust and ignite there.
Sorry but I will have to Disagree on the Champions being better than NGK's.No disrespect to you Nate but I've been thru many thousands of Plugs and I rate Champions just above Czechloslavakian Beru's and Bosch Supers just Above Champion.Champions do run well in Lawnmowers but in anything else I've found that they Foul too Easy.I have had many that Have Been "Fouled" straight out of the box.I have also had many that Has been Snapped off,Cracked and the Center Electrode Porcelin Shattered.Growing up in the Sticks and having a Local Auto parts store less than a Mile Away The only thing they Have to offer is Champions,AC and Autolite.I found myself Walking Over the Mountain (Yes there is a Mountain between me and the store) to get a Sparkplug for my Old CZ.After Walking Back home and Installing the Plug (Champion) I would find that the Bike woud Start and Die then I would Have to Walk back to buy 2-3 More. When I did Find a Place that sold NGK or Nippodenso The trouble went away. :thumb:
Usually if a Plug is Black either Wet or Dry and Sooty they are usually Fouled. You can Burn them with a Torch until they turn a lighter Shade of Gray ad get buy for a While. If I ever Fouled out in the Woods I would either carry a Spare Plug and Wrench or let the bike cool a Bit and stick the end of the fouled plug in the Gas Tank and take thee Plug a good distance Away and Light it to help burn the Crud off.One other way if you are stuck Pull you Spark plug Wire off of the plug and hold it away from the Terminal a few Millimeters. This will cause the Spark to Build up a tad more power and Burn the Crud off of the Plug. :thumb:

Good call, I always carry a spare plug with just in case..

Keep an eye on these plugs. When I had a similar problem I was running rich (float height off) and the plugs fouled quickly.
I agree jugghead. I will replace mine with NGKs i was just quoting from guys that have been around a long time. I know that many here use champions either cause the stealer wants to much for stock replacements or they can't find the NGKs at an auto store. If i had to I will use the champions but i like to leave them for the lawnmowers and tractors. I was just stating that many around here use the champions with no ill effects.
