Title: Some Questions (yes im a noob)
Post by: Nepix on November 10, 2006, 08:53:54 AM
Hey everyone,

I know Im a noob, but i do have a few questions for everyone here concerning my 01 GS. So here it goes

1. I cannot for the life of me get it to stay at idle, I have ordered manual through this site of course and im going to take a look at the carbs. I usually have to have the choke on most of the time to run.
2. is there a normal amount of valve sound? im going to replace the oil this weekend also

I love the bike, I rode it to work for the first time and it is leaking a small amount of oil from upper gaskets.

the dmv registered it without a title and 8 months back reg for 119.00 i was expecting triple that

anyway thanks ahead of time for your input

Casey

Welcome!

1) When are you adjusting the idle?  When you first start up the bike or after it's already warm?  The bike does have a long warmup time.  Are you saying that you have to leave the bike choked the entire time you ride or just at first?

2) The best description I've heard of the sound of the engine is that when running well, it sounds like a powerful sewing machine.

Congrats on your deal with registration.  Insurance on this bike tends to be pretty cheap too.

If you haven't seen this link already, here's a good one to guide you through the oil change: http://gstwin.com/oil_change.htm.  Just remember not to overtighten the oil filter seal cover!

On my ride yesterday I had the choke on the whole time. if I got it below a certain point (with choke less than 1/3 of the way) the bike would shut off. That link is awesome, I will probably print that for the first time I change the oil.

Welcome!

Idle should be set to 1200 +/- 100 when fully warm (preferably at your desination).

It will be kinda low the next time you start it; just use the throttle to keep it from stalling.  Or, set the idle higher (1400rpm; when fully warm).

Hope this helps.
