Is there a way to adjust the break lever, hopefully move it a bit closer to the handlebar? That is, without buying a new one? and if not, how do I know if a new one will fit alright?

you can adjust it if you have an adjustable lever.. if not, you could try bending it.
a standard adjustable lever for a suzuki should fit on the gs

I'll go buy a couple stores in a day or two to look for something. I could either get something adjustable, or osmething a bit shorter. Or I could get new handlebars or some other solution
