Any other MMI students or grads lurking in the shadows out there?
not currently, but after i graduate from college here next year, i was thinking of going there. how do you like it?
All in all I am enjoying it. Some of the instructors are spooky in their level of knowledge and are a great resource (like Charlie, who was mentioned in a different thread). They are also giving students free Snap-On tools and discounted rates to buy more. Matco also offers discounts to students of MMI. The "free" tools are not extravagant and are probably 99% duplicates of things most backyard mechanics have, but hey, its free Snap-On. :)
If you are considering going, be prepared for the "guys night out syndrome". Any time you get a room full of guys in a surrounding of artificial testosterone (aka bikes/engines/gasoline) the conversations and actions have a tendancy to get very lewd and off colour. I wouldn't consider myself prudish and the conversations don't offend me, but they do annoy me. I just don't see the relevance of the Hooters Airline and breast implants to a lecture on suspension and thats not what I am paying my tuition for. /rant
If you are already familiar with mechanical things it will be boring and slow going at first, but it gets better.
i was about to go to UTI for autos last sept but i backed out like a week before classes started....i still want to go tho...

I see the point that wrencher is making. It does get annoying when people are constantly making lewd comments. It just gets old. My neighbor (great guy) is constantly making comments about women and sex and such. Mainly i don't want the mental image of this guy having sex for that matter. Plus it's a matter of tact.
Maybe my perspective is somewhat skewed as I teach at a nursing school where I am surrounded daily by 500 women, but referring to women as a 'piece" or something to 'tag' just irritates the hell outta me. Also in that vein my wife is my wife or melissa not 'my old lady'.

Jake, that is almost exactly my point. It is also compounded by the fact that we are all paying LARGE sums of money for the "priveledge" of sitting in that classroom and it seems to bewilder people that I want to get my moneys worth and then some for my education. It also doesn't matter to me if people (its not just the students) are talking about how "totally f---able Pam Anderson is or if they are running around in circles clucking like a chicken, it is disrupting my ability to learn.
Don't worry about hi-jacking the thread. Quite frankly this one is more interesting. Plus I got the opportunity to use "clucks like a chicken" and "Pam Anderson" in a sentence together.... YEAH. :thumb:
yeah, i graduated on may 03 2002, charlie cavallo was my theory instructor. he is so d--n smart it is not even funny. ask him about the 3m cam. (he designed in 70's)lenny albin on the other hand is :bs: half of the time. if you listen closely to him, and talk to him a month later, you can catch him in his :bs: trip mario the campus cop, (another ins.) watch what you do/say around him. and pride hanke hd late model ins. not quite charlie, but id say next in line. and the snap-on tools are not free, they are figured into your total bill there so is the blue-point meter cool thing about going there and graduating, is you can come back and retake a class, or sit in on one, (free) :mrgreen: (great for brush-ups)plus like i said in the other thread, the deg./dip. you receive, carries A LOT of weight in the industry for those that know the stuff, it will be somewhat boring. but see above. for those that dont, it totally opens up a new chapter in their brains. my only gripe was the rocket riders gsxr cbr etc. who tore up and down the road in front. got the cops on everyones case.
another thing which is cool, out side clinics 3 and sometimes 6, you can get you hands on rather un-molested parts. instructors will tear down bikes, get what they want and essentially junk the rest. i helped clinic 6 instructor tear down gsxr 750 engine and cbr 600 engine completely. he kept gsxr parts, and some cbr, i got cbr block, pistons (newish) and valves. am going to put them into atv project i am working on. we need to keep track of mmi students and grads. they can get info easily(students), part numbers. etc. to help out members here. :cheers:
I've considered going to get out of the IT industries. Around KC here the place is swimming in HDs so I'd probably go into that even though I'm more interested in the performance stuff.
Any idea how much you can make a year just getting into being a motorcycle mechanic? I'd have to make enough to cover my current expenses and the new school loan and the cheapest hourly charge around here is about $70 so I'm hoping it's pretty decent but I want to find out before making the plunge.
I also decided to go from IT to motorcycles. As for the earning potential, I don't think I am remotely qualified to hazard a guess. Pay also seems to vary wildly depending on locale. The best way to find out is go to several local shops, tell the service manager you are considering going to MMI and wanted to see what a garden variety day in the life a motorcycle mechanic is like. You might even end up with a job after graduation from them (I did, so it can happen).
The gixxers and cbrs are definately a problem with the local police. There have been three expulsions that I know of in the last 2 months or so, but they were all H-D's doing burnouts in the parking lot or right in front of the school. One was even bright enough to do one about 20 feet away from the night education manager.
That's kinda what I had thought. I'm just looking for excuses to give up ahead of time ;)
id say if you go to someplace like hawaii, riding season is year round. you could always go freelance in the it dept. during the season, or the off season. pay will be pretty low for a newbie. that is why im buying wrecked bikes, (like my gs), repairing and then selling them. still waiting for shop to open. need seat time to get into shop. which i didnt have when i got out. :oops: so i do this and ride the bikes as i fix them. as of now im looking at a gsxr750 needing forks and bodywork as my next project. but my opinions are, hd is quite nice if people actually take care of them. (rarely done) warm up before you ride. but market for customization is good for mmi/hd grad. on the other hand, the rocket market, more specifically the squids. is good for mmi/import grad doing wreck repair. or engine work. bikes that are wheelied often, or for extended times, usually come in with engine damage, usually on the #3 cyl. cause it starves them of oil so either way you go, there is a market for the grads. i dont see it going away anytime soon. :thumb: :cheers:

What did you think of AMI and how was the transition from school to the real world?
AMI is/was a full time school, four months long, and if you're lucky you'll get to be a corner worker, work the track and flag the Daytona 200! They help you find a job, but I had my eyes on the shops in my area, and was hired in one month. I had a fresh head full of knowledge ready to work and of course a practical application to my own bikes. So, I would say transition was quick and easy. We played horseshoes at lunch and went out beer drinken around Daytona Beach, man! So, it was almost like a normal life, get up in the morning go to work/school for 8 hours, go home, figure out if you feel like cookin or eatin out and if you're lucky you just change and go eat dinner at the strip club across the street! Heh, heh, heh...
