Title: I see why some people hate cops with a passion...
Post by: annguyen1981 on November 21, 2006, 07:08:41 PM
I was moving my bike from the driveway (kinda behind the house) to the side street so people can see that the bike is for sale.

While I ws walking the bike to the spot, a cop sees me and decides to head towards me.  He pulls up next to me.

Pig:  I don't want to see you riding on that bike.
Me:  (Thinking he was kidding, cause it was around 25 degrees outside...)  Not today,  it's too cold.
Pig:  I don't want to see you riding on that bike without a helmet.
Me:  (Wanted to say 'No shaZam! Sherlock') Yeah...

@$$hole.  I wish I did comment to him about his stupidity and to go find someone breaking the law...

But it worked cause you wont ride without a helmet will you

I would never ride on the streets without one anyway.  Even if MA took away the helmet law, I'd still ride with one.

Parking lots going 5-10 mph is another story.  I haven't done it in a LONG time though.

Side street as in public street? Helmet law in MA? If both are the case, then you WERE breaking the law, and it sounds as though you're lucky  he didn't ticket you. If he did cut you a break, and if you weren't moving the bike 100% legally, then why the hate? I'm not trying to bust your ba....chops; I'm just trying to give a different perspective...

In THAT case, that cop needs to go find a donut shop and get his blood sugar up, cuz he's trippin'!

Do you look like a punk or sumpin?  :icon_mrgreen: :kiss3:

+1

If you have a helmet law in your state you better put the helmet on before you even mount the bike  :thumb: if you are pushing it.. as silly as it sounds.. you need to have a helmet on  :thumb:

Just like sitting in your car.. even without the keys in it.. to be legal you have to have your seatbelt on  :thumb:

You are lucky the cop was cool enough to warn you.

Being a cop in the Airforce I hate to see people post here ripping on the police all the time. While there may be some bad cops, most are here to honestly protect you! Remember your own post when someone snags your bike or hurts someone you love and you have to call them to help you. Just hope they havent read your post...Revenge is sweet... even sweeter if you have a badge  :2guns:

I don't have the police.  I have MANY police friends.  I wave at police cruisers when I go by, even if I don't know them...

I just dislike THAT officer.  He saw me from about four blocks away, made a u-turn, and he made it a point to drive over and harass me.

I don't hate all  cops...  Just the ones that pull me over, give me tickets, and/or arrest me.

I still have to say... he was looking out for you... If he wanted a "power fix" or just to F^@k w/ you.. he would have gotten out of the car and found a reason to ticket you.

Did you have your MC Licence on your person? If no ... Ticket
Did you have proof of insurance on your person? If no ... Ticket
Did you have a helmet with you? If no ... Ticket
Was the bike 100% state inspection legal If no ... Ticket
Still have valid plates? If no ... Ticket
Proper signals and lighting? If no ... Ticket

on and on...

Trust me... If he wanted to ruin your day he could have

What did he do to you? Nothing.... Just like 100 people on this site he was just making sure you wear your gear  :thumb:

for him to take time out of his day to make sure you are being a safe rider you are mad? ???

Totally scottpA_GS!

I mean...  It's not like he's a Bellevue, WA cop...  They'll ticket you for j-walking, "cal" stops, burned out LP light... and all kinds of other stupid shaZam!.

Like... WTF?  You got nothing better to do than follow a '69 bug for 12 miles? :icon_rolleyes:

OK...  I'm only mad 'cause all but one ticket I've had was in Bellevue.   And the one that wasn't, I totally deserved.

no...  he was an ass.  I've been told stuff for my benefit, and I've been told stuff because they were an ass.  He was being an ass.  I'm sorry this offends you Scott, but not all cops are good.  It's a sad fact.  They are people after all.

And yes, he could have ruined my day, and then I'd ruin his life in court.  I'm not the kind of person to sue.  I try to settle things without that crap.  I even was going to the PD to file a complaint, but what's the point???

I don't see any cops driving up to people in parking lots and telling them to buckle up.  Do you?  He came up to ME because of the bike.  MAYBE because I'm asian... although I hope not, cause that would make him an even bigger looser.

Or how about cops in front of bars....  warning them not to drink too much, and not to drink and drive.

So why me, when I'm walking the f%$king bike roughly 50 feet.  about 15 feet was along the curbside.

Well...  The J-Walking thing was actually really funny...

I ran across a busy 4-Lane street in front of 8 cops.

The seat-belt ticket was the one that REALLY pissed me off...  1. I was in the back.  2.  There were NO belts in the back.  3.  I was 15.

2.  There were NO belts in the back.

If the car came that way standard then you should have had the ticket fought as, since the car was manufacturered prior to seatbelt requisites, you were exempt.

Most likely just because you're a young man. My son is constantly pulled over for no reason at all...never receives a citation....he simply lives in an area with a lot of young bikers and young drivers. Is it fair? No, but it's reality.

I think I looked respectable...  Nice jeans, nice polo shirt.  granted I didn't shave, but only after a day.

We all have to remember one thing though...  Police officers became cops because they have a "bully" mentality.  They HAVE to be assertive.  Granted, they need it, but some have too much, and it gets them hated.

I still don't get why it was a bad thing... People on this site tell you to wear a helmet all the time?  :cookoo: A cop telling you is wrong?

He may have been gauging the situation. Maybe a bike had been stolen in your area and he wanted to get a better look at yours? There could have been a million reasons why he did what he did.  Every thing is not always what it seems. Unless you get cited or questioned I can't see how anyone would think a cop is messing with you. Think a little deeper about things. Not everyone is out to get you :cookoo:

I think the problem wasn't why the cop said wear a helment but how. Theres no need for them to have an attitude. Why does he have to be rude? because hes not concerned with your safety... but is upset himself or wants to harass some one else to make himself feel powerful. happens all the time... (people are jerks) so call him a "pig" and make your self feel better.  :thumb:

We all have to remember one thing though...  Police officers became cops because they have a "bully" mentality.  They HAVE to be assertive.  Granted, they need it, but some have too much, and it gets them hated.

An, I agree with you most of the time, but I disagree  with you one this one.  I'm sure there are some police officers out there that became cops because they wanted to help people.  Police force is a job, and like any job you have good guy's and bad.  In your situation, I can't make a decision unless the cop told his side also ( there's always to sides to every story).

I have been pulled over many times.  Twice for DUI, no charges because my BAC was below the limit.  Got pulled over for haveing a sign on my car for stolen tag.  But the tag was really stolen had a police report to prove it.  Stoped at 2 road blocks, np there I was the designated driver.  I remember when I was stoped I was always mad, like why are they picking on me, but now that I'm older I realize they were just donig their job and most acted very professional.  These were Cobb Co. Police, they have a rep for giving tickets to people that don't deserve it and for being ass's.  Out of the 5 stops only 1 was an ass.

Got pulled over for speeding by Ga. State Police, was in my dress blues just came home from boot camp and went to church with my Mom and Aunt, I was driving home to drop them off and clocked for 97 in a 55.  State trooper asked me If I knew how fast I was going.  I said yeah I was going 85, He looked at me said you were going 97,  I looked at the speedo and replied well my speedo only goes to 85.

But he was really cool he let me keep my license and knoced down my ticket for 70 then gave me a leture on how it would be a shame if I died from a speeding accident, and that I should be more careful.  My mom was not happy.

and that is the issue. most do act professional. this one didnt. I've been pulled over many times and most times they've been professional with me...but there was that time a gun was pulled on me for no reason...

An, no reason to take what this cop did personally I don't think.  Seems to me like he had a legit motivation -- put yourself in his shoes, if you saw some guy pushing a bike down the street, wouldn't it be reasonable to entertain the possibility that (a) he needs help since the bike maybe broke down, or (b) he might actually be taking someone else's bike on "permanent loan" without their consent, especially if they have no riding gear with them?

As for pulling up and talking to you, that's something he would have to do in order to judge whether it might be (b) above.  If the person gets all nervous, then there might be something iffy going on.

In any case, fine, maybe his attitude wasn't the best and that's annoying, but I don't think he was trying to harass you just for the sake of it.   :dunno_white:

Agreed, if that's the worst experience you ever have to endure when dealing with the cops then count yourself lucky.  It could have been much, much worse.

I don't take it personally, but it was the first time I dispised a cop.  I have been pulled over about four times before.  Each time, I respected the officer and never thought "bad cop".

This time however, I wasn't doing ANYTHING to warrant ANY non-friendly contact.  I was walking the bike ALONG the CURB...  not in the middle of the street.  And it was only for a car-length at that.  The cop pulled the u-turn while I was still in the DRIVEWAY.  That says a lot about the situation.

I think I chose my wording all wrong.  I am re-reading that post, and I sound like an ass.  What I meant to say was that people who become law enforcers need to have a certain type of personality.  Nothing wrong with that, because they NEED to be that way...

I'm watching CSI right now...  I lost my train of thought as to what I was thinking yesterday about this topic... :cookoo:

I dont really have a problem with cops.  Two of my uncles are cops, (well one became a detective and the other works for the bomb squad) and I have only had two tickets.  First one a lady stopped short infront of me and I ran into the back of her car. Nothing serious and the cop was really nice about it. I still got the ticket but understandable.  My other was a 2 months ago.  Going to see my sister north of atlanta on the intersate.  I was going about 80 and just south of atlanta in college park the speed limit drops to 55.  The sun was just setting so it was still light out, no cars around, and dry outside.  So I get pulled over and the cop just hands me a ticket for going 81 in a 55.  Says nothing to me just when my court date is.  Well from my last experience with a ticket I can just pay it and that is it.  So I go to pay my $230 dollar ticket and a couple weeks later I go and take my motorcycle test.  Well I pass and when they go to print my new license the lady tells me I have a serious offense as a minor or something like that (I just turned 20) So guess what, for being under 21 and going more than 24 over the speed limit I lost my license for 6 months.......cant fight it because ignorance isnt an exscuse because I didnt know the law and since I paid the ticket thet is the same as showing up to court and pleading guilty.......so I would like to thank THAT cop for informing me that if I go to court and plead no lo or something I might be able to keep my lisence or better yet just drop it what 5mph and everthing would be fine but NOOOOOOOO......

oh and to top it off, I cant get a work and school permit.  They are not issued if you lose your lisence for speeding. So now I have to find a rides to and from work and I have to take next semester off at school because I commute but now I have to way to get there.  And what makes this even better is that if you lose for license for a DUI you can get a permit.....just not for speeding.  Lesson learned, dont speed.......drink and drive :dunno_white:

An, don't forget to protect and serve, sometimes doing our jobs makes us an asshat. As some might recall I'm Florida Hi-way patrol myself and yes way more than half the cops out their do have inflated ego's, and after five years I'm starting to realize why. Did any of you all ever serve in active military, or did you ever notice anyone you've ever know in active military, they have the same attitude if not sometimes worse, its just something that unfortunately grows on you everyday you go to work and wonder what might happen to me today, like not to long ago hear in central Florida when a fellow officer was shot and killed, yeah routine traffic stop my ass.  And Makenzie the guy who had shot him did not get to far before getting shot himself like 87 times.
I know nobody likes to be harassed, sometime I get upset myself when I go through a drive-thru restaurant and they always ask if I want fries with that or something, even though I said that's it when I ordered, but then I've got to remember their just doing that to serve me, and that's their job, and they were trained to ask for add-ons. And just like most of us we still have to answer to a high power, and no we don't have an actual quota, but I was asked about a year ago why I've never given a citation for a faulty tail/head lamp, so all of us need to be responsible and do the thing that we need to do, and that way there's really nothing to worry about. Trust me there would be nothing better that I would like to hear than that I'm getting laid-off because there's no more crimes, or accidents, that would be the day, but unfortunitly will never happen.

Doing your job is one thing, but but being an ass is another.  And of course I lost my train of thought on this comment...

I don't think the ratio is that high.  Like I said, this is the first time I've dealt with an officer like this.  Sure...  I've seen and heard stories on the news and such, but never in my area of the woods.  I guess it's shocking to realize that crap like that can still happen around here.  A lot of friends and people I talk to always tell stories of how they were pulled over by an @$$hole cop because they are going 80 in a 65 zone, and gave them a "f*cking dumb useless" ticket.  I always shake my head at these comments because quite frankly...  they deserved it.

I've gotten two tickets in my driving "career", and both times, I deserved it.  I never went to court to argue that it wasn't my fault.  The first time, I did however, go to the DMV to plead my case to the man in charge to let me keep my license.  Not to reduce the ticket.

too much typing...  lost the thought again...

I know how you feel An.  It sucks getting f'ed with by a jerk cop.  This probably wont be the last time so remember the feeling you've got now.  Next time, don't let yourself be the victim.  You've got a mouth, use it.  If you feel like the cop is harrasing you, tell him.  Don't let those feelings fester.  It's not healthy.  I find it easier to deal with the situation at the moment.  I have no problem telling an over zealous officer to find something better to do with his time before I make a complaint to his superior.  Use tact and make your point clear and concise.  It also helps to dismiss the cop.  Say something along the lines of "I'm walking my bike down MY driveway, and if there's nothing else you'd like to bother me with at the moment, I'd appreciate it if you'd be on your way!"  You can't be harassed if you don't allow it.  If someone starts to do it, stop them.

An, the more I've thought about it your a good person, obviously better than he is, and you totally have the right to be upset with that situation. We all deal with assholes every now and then, and most of the time I prefer not to lower myself to their level (just like you didn't). I usually try to turn up my charming personality and return there insults with kindness and hope they really get pissed off,  then I end it with a good day sir/mam. Sure its a bit more difficult when its an authority figure like a cop or even say a teacher or boss, but when you know your in the right and continue to keep your self in a "orderly manor" in the end you still remain to be the better person. I would use this as a learning experience, and if you ever find yourself in a same situation again, do pretty much just like you did, but remember that badge#, or his name tag, or even the the # on his car so you can report their misconduct to a supervisor, because even if he thought you were stealing the bike, or about to ride it with no helmet, you were not, and you did nothing wrong to be treated like that, especially right their in front of your home, and because just like my Chief reminds our dept. all the time we are Civil Servants.  :cheers

Oh and the ratio af more than half, no I really did not mean ass holes, just that they think there so righteous and better than most people, and sometimes a little to cocky.

You said "cocky"  *snicker*  :icon_lol:

I acually do the same thing when someone really gets to me (mainly at work).  When someone's being a real tool about something, I be EXTRA nice and kind, and when they're leaving, I yell out with a friendly, "Have a wonderful day!"

That always gets a satisfying reaction from the person.

I never thought about being the "better man" idea.  I'll try to remember that the next time someone pisses me off.  That should help me calm my nerves and not react stupidly.  Thankz YP for the advice. :thumb:

When I was younger I got a lot of (what I thought was) unfair or even illegal treatment from cops, including no-cause stop and searches at transit centers, both in Oregon and California. I thought it had partly to do with being Asian, and at the time looking kind of skater/stoner scruffy. On the other hand, Portland cops can be quite cool. Nowadays I dont really care and apparently I dont concern them much anymore either. Although one time I had to break into my own car to get my keys, someone called the cops on me, they rolled up like I was Rodney King or something, cuffed me and were ready to blow my head off, then when they saw it was my car, they all left without helping me at all. I knew they had equipment too. And recently a Beaverton cop who was in Portland for some reason (asshat) gave me a $90 ticket for going through a stop sign on a bicycle. (Duh, dipshit, this is downtown portland).

Most recently, I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop after hauling ass at 45 mph on a 30/35 street, and doing a quadruple lane change. Somehow he took pity on me and after some questions he let me go. Although he called my bike a "scooter". As in, "How long have you had the scooter?"

I don't know if he misinterpreted the bike from behind or he was f'ing with me. Probably the former.  :2guns: Still, he was pretty cool about it.  :thumb:
