Title: pablo lowsides at track.
Post by: pantablo on November 25, 2006, 04:58:22 PM
wish I could say I had a great time at the trackday today but I lowsided in T4 in only the second session. broke a metal coolant hose connector so I was done for the day. Unhurt except my pinky got squashed under the clip on/brake. nail is turning all sorts of colors underneath....
I was running race take-off tires, wasnt going hard but I guess I had a bit too much lean. Front just tucked nice and easy...bike and I slid and bike rolled once when it caught the grass edge. happened to a bunch of people today actually.

no broken bones this time.... :thumb:

DAMN IT!

Glad you're okay, and at the track, and glad that you had (mostly) track plastics.

If you need help turning a wrench on anything, let me know.

****EDIT******

Which leathers did you have on?

Pinky -- ouch!
Bike -- ouch!

Pablo -- OK!  :thumb:  (Ice, ice it baby!  Then when the nail turns purple, drill a small hole in it to relieve the pressure. Really. It works!)

See kids. That was the place for this type of behavior. There are no six inch concrete curbs or people in Fords to impact with.

I just wish the pain in my side were lowside related.

On second thought, maybe not.

thanks everyone. getting a bit sore...gonna be bruised on my right shoulder and ribs, and on my left tricep (bike hit me).

QuoteGlad you're okay, and at the track, and glad that you had (mostly) track plastics.
I just installed NEW race plastics...except the tail, that was my old track plastic.

Damage to bike:
-race plastics in need of patch and repair.
-left frame slider ripped out of bracket
-left OEM rearset bent, but useable
-crushed metal coolant line, leaks coolant
-rear subframe more bent than before
-right barend needs replacing
-right master cylinder/lever/barend round down a bit
-right frame slider did its job, but looks worse for wear
-tiny 1/4" diameter chip in rear marchesini lip

bike runs and I rode it back to the pits so most everything else seems fine.

damage to gear:
-kushitani surfing on right thigh, arm and shoulder
-NEW alpinestar GP-Plus gloves scraped but did their job wonderfully
-NEW Sidi Vertigo boots (right one) scraped up but did its job wonderfully. Appears to have slid heavily on the toe slider so I guess the bike was partly on my foot as we initially slid.
-1.yr old helmet has small gash on right rear...might run it as is for a bit.
GOOD GEAR WORKS.

Quote(Ice, ice it baby!  Then when the nail turns purple, drill a small hole in it to relieve the pressure. Really. It works!)
several of my buddies also said the same thing, from experience...currently only the right half, from tip to end, of my pinky nail has turned blue/green.

what happened:
cold tires on a cold day. came out of the pits to start my second session, 2 buddies in front of me, one buddy immediately behind me. came out on the track on a slight turn (actually T2 of the course), then into 3/4 which is a chicane. I transitioned from the left turn 3 to right turn 4 and as I got to what would be my full lean on first lap, before I even got on the gas it just slipped away from me.  I hit the ground and slid right next to my bike. I was partly on the bike (left arm)...I guess I was sliding faster than the bike?...As the bike went off the pavement and hit the grass it flipped, hitting the underside of my left arm and slamming the left side of the bike into the ground. It took a full tumble, in my full view...oh my eyes!... When we came to a stop I got up and did the classic head shaking walk toward the barricades further on. Ambulance crew came and told me what a wonderful slide I did...years of practice racing bicycles...
QuoteEver crash in a crit?
...years of practice racing bicycles...

I feel more sorry for the friend of a friend that showed up on his ducati 999r (isnt that like $25k?)...he lowsided and said his side fairing alone was gonna run him $2k (all carbon fiber). Why he didnt pony up $1200 for good race plastics (unlike me, spending $400) is beyond me...

Damn Pablo, glad you're ok.  I have a partly smashed fingernail right now, too (from work) and people keep telling me about the poking the hole thing and I *refuse* to do it.  Ick.

I think those swanky leathers look great a little skuffed up!

Glad you came out better this time than last.  :kiss3: Didn't you promise not to do this again? I could  have sworn ya' did... :bs:

Please be more careful at the track, pablo. World domination is difficult enough without anyone on the "take over the world" team being out of commission!  :icon_twisted:  ;)

Here's some advice from an old worthless piece of shaZam! man that you detest on this board.

Hopefully you'll learn before that wife and child are without a father to have and to hold.

you two knock this shaZam! off. wannabebiker-fair warning to stop 'interacting' in this consistent way with OMW. I already gave you a private warning.

OMW-knock your stupid talk the hell up too. I know damn well where my priorities are and giving up those things that make me happy (which make me a better father and husband) arent on the list of things to give up anytime soon. My wife understands that-so I couldnt care less what you think of that.

back on topic, if not you'll both get a ban.

morning temps were reported about 50-55F. track was visibly damp first session. day's high temp was about 65F.

dont worry about me. not much really pisses me off or offends me to the point I cant take care of it. thanks for your concern though.

so basically it amounted to damp track + coldish tires?

Oh man Pablo, I didn't even see this when I posted last night, that sucks. Not a very good weekend for track riding it seems. At least this time the leathers took the damage and not your collarbone. You can't really beat free leathers saving your butt.

Yeah your buddy is pretty much an idiot.  The Xerox edition 999R is even more expensive ($30K+, I believe) and has a full set of plastics that are unique from every other 999.  Quite hard to replace if those Italian boys over there don't feel like laying CF for a month.  Race plastics are the way to go if you are riding your bike at the track (even just once, IMO).

Glad to see someone actually using an RR the way it was meant to be used.  Makes me wish I could get out there and ride on the track again, either dirt or street.

Hope you heal up fast and I know you'll keep enjoying the riding.

yes, cold day and cold race tires. I'm certain street tires like the pilot powers or diablo corsa's I usually run would have been fine. I've run winter trackdays with street tires without incident. Race take-offs are a crap shoot and these were crap...My other buddies were also on race tires and they had a few close calls but no crashes, and you know I'm a smooth rider. F'ing tires never warmed up as long as I ran them.

yeah, I dont feel bad about the leathers, even if I'd paid for them thats what they're for. They saved my butt for sure. That was exactly the kind of crash I always expected I'd have (except on hot tires really pushing them)-simple slide across the track...no broken bones. At least your crash was rain induced...

Quote from: Mk1inCali on November 27, 2006, 09:00:35 AM
Yeah your buddy is pretty much an idiot.

not my buddy! But I agree. In retrospect I think he was a poser. I mean what self respecting rider would also get the Ducati leathers? At the end of the previous session he was all upset about having lost his little Ducati logo'd solo cowl rubber pad...Like, big deal. Only those with WAY too much disposable income take a bike like that to the track without race skins on...and they wouldnt Buddha Loves You about the cost of replacements. Know what I mean?

Anyway, thanks for all the kind words.

Glad you're ok and that your clavicle is still in one piece.

Get the suit checked out by the local race leather repair shops just to make sure it's fine around all the seams.  I'm glad you mentioned the GP Pro's.. they're on sale here at a few local shops and I was planning on picking them up instead of the more expensive Techs.

On the bright side, you didn't spend the money on having the new skins painted the Honda anniversary edition colour scheme.

no more trackdays for a long while. I had december 5th planned but wasnt sure I could get the bike ready so I postponed it.  I also havent replaced my helmet yet. I dont know why I didnt think of this sooner but I should have had a cheap trackday spare helmet so I wouldnt ruin my second $500 Arai. HJC's are $135!

I'm gonna go riding this sunday probably...
