Title: Anyone consider dropping in an RD350 engine?
Post by: Wondertwin on November 25, 2006, 11:55:50 PM
I've been thinking abut this for awhile, as I've got a perfectly good Yamaha RD350 2-stroke engine sitting on my shelf in the garage...

If the engine in my project GS turns-out to be no good (and lets hope it doesn't), I wonder how easy the swap might be.  Size-wise, it's right on.  Other than fabbing some mounting plates or welding some different mounting tabs to the frame, my concerns would be if a set of RD expansion chambers would mount without too much modification, and if the kickstarter would have enough clearance.  Otherwise, it seems like a match made in heaven!

So, has anyone heard of this unholy union being performed, or have any pictorial evidence?   :icon_mrgreen:

I know a Guy in FL I believe that is going to Attempt it with an RD400.Also saw a Guy on Ebaay hat was parting out a GS on eay last week that was going with an RD400.Anything is Possible I guess.I'm going to Attempt it with a Suzuki T500 and I know that it has Been Done Before.

With the Chambers you may be able to get by with a et of RZ350 Chambers without a Lot of Modification. It Looks like I'm going to have to startt with Scratch and Either Build a Set of Custom Pipes or Take the Bike Somewhere to Hae them Made to fit the Engine/Frame.Right now I am getting the Engine Lined up i the Frame so I can Mark everything to be cut. :icon_confused: :icon_confused:

Man, I though for sure someone on here had either done it or seen a website where someone had!  I've searched to no avail so far...  I'd contacted the guy on eBay prior to your post, and he said he'd send me pics of his project.  We'll see if I get them...  BTW, do you have any pics of the T500 conversion?

Anyway, the Suzuki engine sounds like it might also work size-wise.  The biggest reason I was thinking of the RD engine was because I actually have one!  That, and the fact that there are a million used ones and so many aftermarket part suppliers (both of  cheap replacement parts and tuning stuff).
