Title: 89 Gs Light Troubles...
Post by: Fast Jetta 97 on December 04, 2006, 09:34:25 AM
I am having problems with my turn signals, and tail light.

The turn signal when turned on, all 4 come on and do not blink.

The brake light is always on normal, but does not turn on when brake is pressed.  (the running light works i suppose, but the actuall brake light wont come on..

Any help with these would be greatly appreciated...

Turn signals: Are those the original ones, or LED replacements. With the latter it happens, you have to exchange the flasher to use them properly.

Brake light: Is it the same, independent of the brake you operate (hand or foot)? If yes, look for soething "downstream" of the switches. If no, check the respective switches. And wait for Starwalt to chime in and post one of his reduced wiring diagrams or search for it. He sure has posted a diagram of the brake light wiring before.

as for the turn signals, have you checked the fuses?

The brake light situation - have you checked the switches to activate the front and rear brake?

I knew we had this before (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=26323.msg276200#msg276200):

An, the GS has only one fuse. If it blows, the electrics pretty much go dead.

Yea, they are the aftermarket LED turnsignals...  (all 4 turn on at the same time and wont flash)

and Neither the Hand nor foot brake will activate the rear brake light (but the running light works.

ALSO, is the light system 12volt? meaning i want to replace the front healight with a different setup, is it all 12volt.

You can't run LED turnsignals without a resistor.. they will flash too fast, in this case flashing fast enough to appear constant. Do a search for "how to install LED turnsignals" you'll get all the info you need.

There's my little thread about aftermarket LEDs.

I ended up going with a pair of Diodes and a Tipco EP37.  It adds about $22 to the cost (total) but they look fantastic and work well now.

It's Probably your Flasher or the original Bulbs Didn't Have Enough Resistance to mae the Blink.

So here's the score:

Does that sum it up?  If so, Jughead's correct about the flasher.
Look over MrDan's post about making LEDs work.

Let us know if you've sorted it out.

Yep, thats sums it up for sure...
Where is this "flasher" located... is this like a fuse, or its it more a relay box type thing... is it easy to get (napa. orielly's) or do i need to order it ?

Oh and any ideas on the best place to get a battery for it and the best type to get?

The TSR (turn signal relay, aka "flasher") is on the RH side of the bike under the rear body plastic. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so...

There are several threads regarding batteries, but here's the scoop from the GSTwin FAQ pages... CLICK HERE  (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=12817.msg108024#msg108024)
