Title: Rego, 3rd Party and Insurance Thread
Post by: galahs on December 06, 2006, 07:22:37 AM
Alrighty its time to register my 2005 GS500 again. I'm 26 and have a full no claim bonus.

NSW Rego: $97

NRMA Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance: $502.08

Allianz Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance: $407.00

Both insurances offer some basic level of "Rider at Fault Cover" as well.

Both of these insurances include the new levy to cover Children Involved in Accidents.

Once I add full comprehensive insurance (due in 3 months time) it will cost me over $1000!!!!

I thought bikes were meant to be cheap

NSW residents can use the RTA's GreenSlip calculator to find the best price Greenslips.

Try western QBE. When I did my rego November I paid $400 total. The killer is the green slip.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I have the advantage of being an old fart (being over 30 )

I have the advantage of being ancient (over 40  )
Standard excess  $350
Inexperienced rider excess  $250 Got my learners in Feb & licence in June.

I paid for CTP/Rego back in July. $96 for rego (or there abouts), and $624 for CTP (looks like $675 next time round)  Under 25 in Sydney metro is the killer  :2guns: They need to bring in single seat rego/ctp like they do in Qld.

Get a fake ID ... heheh

Sorry to laugh - I lived the life of excess once and drove around a Toyota Surf - would cost me about $1500 to register and $3200 comp insurance under 25, and I saved about $500/year after that.  True I'm now over 30, but the GS seems a deadset bargain to me!

Be patient young ones, and stay upright so you CAN enjoy that cheap(er) insurance.

They seem to have good prices for comprehensive insurance and an online quote facility.

They don't do CTP Green Slips atm :(

I am that 'bloke".  Good to talk with you.  Regarding insurances.  My CTP is with NRMA and cost $388.00.  They are not the cheapest.  However unlike most CTP's which only cover other peoples (third parties) personal injuries, the NRMA do offer some cover (limited) for the actual policy holders injuries as well.  My comprehensive cover with "Insure My Ride is $254.00 per year for my 2003 GS500.

Also if you run a car as well then try www.budgetdirect.com.au  I saved over $200.00 on comprehensive cover for my 2004 Astra.  It is now $370.00 per year.

just pulled my rego/ctp bill outta the post box, rural SA

for the 12 months
rego=  $31.00
ctp = $140.47
total $171.47  :thumb:

however you have to add  :flipoff:

admin fee $6.00
Emergency services levy $24.00
Stamp duty on insurance policy $60.00 (how can a policy of $140 have stamp duty of $60?)
GST on CTP Insurance prem $12.53

Giving a total for 12 months rego and CTP of $274.00  (over $100 in taxes and charges :dunno_white:)

got Comprehensive with Swann $335 a year.... I'm on restricted licence, over 30, max no claims bonus

But my rego costs will be about the same as Old mans being well over 30 but not quite 40  :thumb:

My EH is only $115 for 1 year or $333 for three years. (Club rego).
Then there's the commodore...ohh & the trailer... stuff it...i'm moving to Perth.

Jeez!! I think I won't say too much in case the pollies here in the West take notice of what's happening over there.

Just paid mine for the 1000. Came to $210.60
License $53.00
Insurance $121.45
Stamp duty $13.35
Recording fee $10.65
GST $12.15

No such thing as solo rates here in WA either.

My car (a Suzuki GV of course) cost $415.95 to register and insure.

This seems about right as far as I'm concerned. A bike should be half that of a car.

Seriously why do us New South Welshman get stung with so many state taxes, stamp duties, petrol excises and tolls!

When I get a green slip, why do I have to pay as much for my GS500F as my cuz does with his 1000cc ZX-10R!!!

Why do we pay the full car price to use toll ways?

Seriously they need to piss off state governments. Local and Federal is enough!!!

$405

if  I had a GSXR-1000 it would be....  $405 !!!!

What a crock of shaZam!! I have to pay the same as a 1000cc super sports
yet a bike that is equally as quick as mine gets theirs for 1/3rd the price!!!

On a similar note my car tax came through today - my first ever car tax since ive always ridden bikes and my first bike tax was £15 and my zxr has been £32. Car tax... £140

Problem is its a government set class.

There are only two categories of bikes according to the NSW government.

Under 300cc
Over 300cc

Its bullshit!

I'll get all the facts then send them a nicely worded email (seriously) in a few days time.

I think when you reach over 30yrs old, WQBE do more capacity brackets on CTP instead of the usual <300cc, >300cc.

Unfortunately I've got a few years to go before things get cheaper

Here's my letter

Quote
To whom it may concern,

I would like to raise an issue that I believe is unfair for owners of
certain Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) approved
motorcycles.

As you would be aware, new rules introduced on the 6th September 2002,
to allow Learners and Provisional license holders to ride certain
motorbikes that had a power to weight ratio of less than 150kw per
tonne and with an engine capacity below 650cc. This replaced the
previous restriction that only allowed bikes with an engine
displacement of 250cc or less.

I congratulate that move as I believe it is a sensible update, as
limiting engine performance is more crucial than limiting engine size.
However I believe the GreenSlip laws should be modified to reflect
this change.

Currently there are two categories of GreenSlips for Motorcycles.

Under 300cc and Over 300cc

The price difference between the categories is very substantial often
up to 3 times as much for riding a larger capacity bike.

I would suggest the categories be changed so that the two categories
are "LAMS compliant" and "Non LAMS Compliant"

This would mean bikes are classified on Power output not just engine capacity.

In the current system the owner of a Suzuki GS500 pays an equal amount
as an owner of a Kawasaki ZX10R that has 4 times the power.
On the opposite side of the scale, there are many 250cc motorbikes
that exceed larger capacity LAMS approved motorcycles peak power. Yet
they get a heavily reduced GreenSlip price for falling under the 300cc
category.

For reference on a recent enquiry of GreenSlip prices I was quoted:

BIKE MODEL - ENGINE CAPACITY - PEAK POWER - WEIGHT - GREENSLIP PRICE

SUZUKI GS500 - 487cc - 30kw - 180kg = $405

KAWASAKI ZX10R - 998cc - 121kw - 175kg = $405

HONDA CBR-250RR - 250cc - 34kw - 160kg = $147

As can be seen, Engine capacity is not the best way of judging a bikes
performance and hence GreenSlip prices.

I hope common sense prevails and the NSW GreenSlip pricing categories
will be reviewed and modified to reflect the sensible changes made
with the introduction of LAMS.

Insuremyride were the only ones that would consider offering me comprehensive cover. The rest all declined citing I had not held an unrestricted licence for 2yrs minimum (and said that excluded any periods on L's or P's). IMR's quote was pretty reasonable including gear cover and the guy even mentioned the $1500 additional inexperienced rider at fault excess they charge when I spoke to them.

I'm another November rego - 19th

Just paid my 12 months rego - Qld. $400.20. Twenty cents? Give us a friggen break. Geeze.

Insurance due. I've got it fully comprehensively insured at an agreed amount which is more than a new bike costs currently. $240 through Swann.

Here's the kicker but... IF I approach Swann as a new customer, I don't get this price. I only seem to get this price as an existing customer.

No kidding. I must have some kind of "preferred customer" note attached to my file or something. They are Really good to me.

Got a quote on my recently acquired "new to me" other bike from the dealer. Went to Swann, said nothing about the quote and they insured it for a grand more and for less premium. And chances are, next year when it's due they'll say "I think we can do better" have a look and then do better. It's what they seem to do for me.

On the other hand, my car is through someone else. I claimed for hail damage and they dropped me to Rating 3 WTF! - Make a claim and drop two ratings. It's not like I crashed, it was hail for fugs sake. So when the next year I went Up to rating 2 but the premium still went Up, I'm like "how can you give me a bigger discount but charge me more than you were?" When it comes around again I'll switch that to Swann as well.

Although I'm only young my ctp and rego combined was about $400 though a smaller branch company of AAMI that insured the previous owners. All other quotes put rego costs up around 600-800.

However comphrensive on a 04' gs500f with $400 excess is $2500 for me. Despite no accidents.

What a difference 12 months makes.  Swann CTP has increased by $106  :o, so got a quote off NRMA only to find the price was exactly the same  :dunno_black:

CTP will not differ for your rego. The choice is an illusion.

BUT, outside of rego CTP is where the changes really take place.

Does anyone here know about the laws (I'm in NSW) regarding the legality of modifications?

For something like fitting a muffler, bars and mirrors etc. Superficil stuff. Is that technically illegal?

Go onto the NSW RTA website and read the VSIs. They are pretty clear on what you can and can't do. As for what your insurance company is happy with that's a different ball game.
Muffler will have requirements as its not as superficial as you may think for the RTA. I'm not sure what they are but have a read on the website. The more you read on the site you will find things like, every second 4x4 is illegal because of the extra large tyres they are running etc. Quite interesting. I've done a fair amount of car modifying and VSIs were a good guide, so when the cars went to engineering there usually wasn't to much to get fixed up.

A.Milos are you on a restricted license? P's, L's?  That will rule out the muffler :police:

Rego is pretty standard at 112
Not sure of green slip for the gs but for my gpx250 it was 376

Comp insurance was 1550 and that's with discounts for rating 4 and aami safe driver rewards. That's the price of being 21 I guess

Wow man. Full comp with AAMI is costing me 376 this year. I am rating 1 and platinum but still your almost 4 times the amount and I've only had a bike license for 3 and a bit years.

I recently renewed my rego for 12 months, here in QLD. All the CTP insurers are the same price.

Came to $411.00.

CTP $262.80.
Registration $98.70.
"Traffic Improvement Fee" $49.50. (Who knows where this is going).

I check with each of the CTP providers to see if they are doing any 'switch to us' promotions,, usually in the order of a $20-25 gift card. I couldn't see much difference between them in terms of the coverage they provide, so I just switch between them each rego change on each vehicle and spend the gift cards on food/clothing. I figure 40 bucks a year for not doing much is better than a kick in the teeth...

You'll find that having a vehicle's 3rd party with an insurer counts as having insurance with them. So if any offer discounts for multiple policies, the 3rd party choice counts. by doing this I save more than $40 a year on insurance.
