On a full tank I can go about 170 miles until I start getting nervous, and from what I've read that is high.

Is there some possibility that while in "on" or whatever the normal setting is that it is really drawing from the main and reserve? Thanks.

Don't forget we all have different gas tanks.  Pre/post 2001, and CA/non-CA means there are four different fuel capacities, right?

2001+ non-CA 5.3 gal
2001+ CA 4.9 gal?
pre-2001 non-CA 4.5 gal??
pre-2001 CA ?????

On my 49-state 2001 I go about 240 miles on the street before switching to reserve.  About 160 miles on the track.

I have an '89, and I get 200 miles on it before I look for gas.  I have no reserve on my bike however.

My '05 goes about 220 to reserve.   I generally refuel by 200, so I don't hit reserve a whole lot.

For those in parts of the world other than the USA remember to bear in mind that a US gallon is slightly more than an Imperial gallon.
1 US Gallon = 0.833 Imperial gallon.

I got around 160 miles before I felt the need to refill.  Around 175 or so when I need to switch to reserve.

I have a Y2K Model and I believe it holds approx. 4.5 Gallons. When I get 180 miles from fillup, I start freaking and looking for petrol. It will go further though. I run on reserve all the time as I have had fuel starvation probs (on run) since it was a little baby. I bought it new in the crate. Hope this helps. Wilson

Wow. What am I doing wrong???? I  only get 141 miles per tank on my GS500 2001. DAMN! That sucks. But then I only drive less than 10 mi per day mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear. Is something wrong with that? Also, what is the BEST gas to get? Should I use the 87 grade unleaded and from what company? It seems she runs badly on premium BP gas. She does okay with Citgo. Any suggestions????

Dude.........I believe my instruction manual says plain-ass 87 octane pretty much only. The only way I'd use premium is if I was in Mexico and that was all that was available. Brugh..........
If you are riding around town in 2nd and 3rd all day, then you'll get nowhere NEARLY the good gas mileage you should be getting. Just my thoughts on the subject.......and that holds true with ANY vehicle. Also...........idling through "wake zones" in a boat will EAT GAS. Hope this helps, Wilson

Hm, I don't have the Suzuki manual but Clymer says to give it 87 Octane. Under the seat, though, there's a label that says to feed it 91 octane. Is the label wrong? The bike is a 1995 49-state.

Filled her up yesterday at 327 km and got almost 14 l in without too much wiggling. A little bit more than 14 l with the usuall voodoo. I guess that was pretty close call.

What country are you in?  Europe and Australia use RON, USA & Canada use (R+M)/2.  So 87 in US is the same as 91 in other places.

Average of 200 US miles, the lowest I've ever hit res. was about 170 miles, and the highest was about 230 miles. It all depends on how spirited your riding.

Oh, I too have noticed BP's gas formulas to run poorly in the GS, my favorite place to fill up is Chevron, after many years I've become a believer of "Techron" , and they put in all their grades.

Well, I just had to throw on my reserve at about 330 Kms (2006 GSF).  Its been cold here though so Ive been spending gas warming it up,hehe.

Im running 87 octane and it seems to run fine.  I do notice in the manuel it states differant octane requirements but I think it depends where in the world you are as there are differant qualities of gas.  It mentions here in Canada that we can sue 87 and thats what Im gonna use. O0

On my 93' I'll usually hit reserve right around 150 and not push it much past 180-190.
(thats getting 52 or so MPG)

I'm from Cali, but the bike originally was from Chicago. I'm using 87 right now without any problems, so I'll just stick with that until something comes up.

Well that's weird then.  A GS definitely never needs 91 octane.

Well, unless you've modified the crap out of your little GS's air cooled engine in ways that people should only dream of.

It's because it's so damn cold up North, all you Yanks can do is sit inside near the heat and "yank on it".

Errr "Yanks" actually is a term referring to Americans not Canadians.  Now, if you had said "Canuck" that IS a term referring to both one of our under funded hockey teams and to those that live in the great nation of Canada.

Alot of the US actually has the same weather that we do.  Not sure why alot of Americans think we live in igloos.  I guess thats just someone letting their ignorance show.  :dunno_white:

Bul.........??????????? WTF are you talking about????????

Are you on CANUCK CRACK????

Not that this has a damn thing to do with anything BUT..........down here in the Bananna Republic
of South Louisiana, we don't have alligators in the backyard either (but they are some miles away).

I was talkin' to the transplanted Yank over in Florida. Down here anyone that lives in Shreveport, LA
is a yankee. Where I come from anyone that lived in Memphis was a Yankee. Of course this was all in
good fun just to show how REALLY SOUTHERN we WERE (where we resided). Oh, and two more things.
f%$k YOU.                  Love, Wilson

On my 02 GS I get 220-240 miles in the summer and about 200-220 miles in the winter untill I hit reserve and it takes 4 gal to fill if I hit a station shortly thereafter or can go another 50 miles looking for one.  Have a 5.3 gal tank.

I get a very consistant 60 mpg average summers in all kinds of riding and that drops off to about 55-60 mpg winters.   All on 87 octane.  :thumb:

Bike is stock, why screw up something that works.

I ran my bike to empty once by mistake.  It's an unmodified K2 and I got just over 400km out of it before it coughed, spit, choked and died.  That was when I learned the hard way what the PRI setting is for.  It was also during a long trip where most of my riding was conservative highway.  I usually fill at around 250km now just to be on the safe side.

Luckily I had a friend about 15 minutes away with a gas can.  There was a huge black cloud moving toward me at a high rate of speed  :o.  I since found out that if you have a CAA Plus membership they will bring out gas for a motorcycle and not just a car.
