Title: Motorcycle hand wave to scooters?
Post by: ixolas on December 15, 2006, 04:50:02 PM
Ok so when I drive around on my bike and see others on their bike I always give the left hand down peace sign.  But driving home the other day I see this kid on one of those little scooters you get for like $50 or something, struggling to keep up with the 35mph traffic as cars go around him.  I knew what was coming and was thinking of what I should do when he did it: the motorcycle peace sign.  Now I didn't want to be a jerk but thats not a motorcycle.. its a motorized scooter; I mean my lawnmower probably has that much hp.
I raised my hand and gave him a piece sign instead of putting it down, but even that made me felt dirty immediately afterwards..
I guess I should be cool to them too but.. its like bringing a pocket knife to a swords show and thinking your cool too.

So what do you guys do?

my rule of thumb is that if they have a helmate on i will wave no matter what they are riding.  I don't discriminate

werd, me too. I figure, on two wheels, they can get killed just as easily as me. They get my respect.

I wave to scooters and even Harleys.  However, I don't wave to those little pocket bike thingys.  They shouldn't be on the road in the first place.   ;)  :flipoff:

I don't tend to wave to scooters unless their rider is an older person simply using it as a fantastic commuting device. Things comes about because 99% of all the people around where i live simply have scooters and do stupid shaZam! all the time on them coz' ther not yet old enough to get an R1. Basically they are all squids who don't give a shaZam! if you wave to them or not. If i waved they would prolly pull U turn and think i was dis' rispectin' em! init!

I thought the head nod was more popular than the wave across the pond anyways?  :icon_mrgreen:

Well yes i tend to use "the nod" more often than the wave. I often reserve the wave for curtious car drivers (you gotta be nice to the good 'uns)

Absolutely. I'll add that I wave not only to pretty much everyone on two wheels, but most definitely to our four-wheeled friends who act kindly and don't try to kill me!  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Ditto. I tried it three times, and just got stared at, so I don't initiate it any more. I've yet to see one of them initiate it. Just like the motorcycle cops, and guys on expensive shiney Harleys, they seem insulted by it.

I'm thinking that the folks on scooters don't know about the wave.... I certainly didn't know about the wave before I started riding. When I received my very first wave, I felt like a *REAL* biker.....ya' couldn't pry the grin off my face with a crowbar....  :icon_lol:

Most people who ride scooters aren't motorcyclists.  They don't get it, and don't care that they don't get it.  I'll wave when one of them waves at me, but I've yet to see it.

I once got a wave from a CHP cop.  However there was another rider a little behind me and he didn't wave back.  Probably too busy watching his speedo at the time!

Ah, and normally the few scooters that I've come across don't wave back, nor do most Harley drivers.  :dunno_white:

I usually nod to all two wheelers - there are not enough of us to start discriminating. I usually find only a small proportion of scooter kids nod back, some Harley and big cruiser types don't either but they do when I'm on my old yammy with it's higher bars.

Cops around here usually give the nod, they often drop into the same cafes and roadside stops as other bikers, they also stay away from H's Cafe on Wednesday nights in the summer which is perhaps a blessing and a masterpiece of diplomacy.

As we get into winter the percentage reply to nod/wave gets a lot higher, something to do with mutual respect i suppose.

Yea ive noticed that too Cal. Im pretty sure it's because theres alot greater respect if you love your motorcycle so much you will ride through the winter!

I've always gotten either a reply wave or an initiated wave from a bike occifer.

Hairley's  always wave back or start the wave (except in Connecticut...  they NEVER wave)
Title: Re: Motorcycle hand wave to scooters?
Post by: rob1bike on December 17, 2006, 07:10:06 AM
Ann said "hairleys" lmao! Did you mean to do that? :)

Scooter riders never wave back. A lot of them in dees har parts are DUI violators and can't drive a car. Or they are 60 year old gas savers, either way they don't wave back.

The hairley guys wave most of the time, if they look hardcore they almost always wave.
The helmetless kids on liter bikes just look at ya like they're ready to fight.
I flip off more cars than I wave to.

bike officers always return the wave to me.  Most of the time people on scooters around here are excited to see a motorcycle and wave uncontrolably, this makes me laugh a little.  I always wave back.  It might be that most people on scooters around here are riding them cause they don't have a drivers license or don't have one anymore.

two wheels and a helmet warrants a wave.

Yeah, if they are not driving within an enclosed cage, and arent peddling I wave.  It just makes the scooter guys WANT to join in on the big bike action.

Not waving makes them bitter and NOT want to belong.

My 2 cents anyway.

Back in the summer there was a group of 3 tough looking guys on choppers up ahead of me in traffic. An older guy on a scooter merged right in the middle of the group and rode with them a pretty good ways. The scooter guy acted like he was part of the gang and even started a conversation with them. :icon_lol:

Like most people on here I don't disrespect anyone whether they're on a Harley, scooter, bicycle, or feet. I'm not the type to initiate a wave but I will wave back to anyone. It's the jackasses that have no respect for other people that really annoys me. It seems to have gotten progressively worse over the years so there's probably nothing that can be done about it short of moving to a deserted island.

I have waved at numerous scooters on accident cause I thought they were motos. None of them waved back. They just look straight ahead and seem a little embarrassed if anything. :icon_confused:

I wave to scooters because around here there aren't many too wheeled, engine powered machines around. I often reserve the wave when I'm around packs of guys riding supersports because I know they won't return though.

There is this lady who has this pink scooter, pink jacket (don't think its armored, or even leather for that matter), and a pink 3/4 helmet that rode around all the time.  She never waved, even if I was next to her at a light and gave her a head nod.  She looked like a manicen, sitting perfectly straight and never moving.

Ok, first, is this even a question?

Yes you wave to them.

The wave has NOTHING to do with power, speed, status or any of that. It has to do with all the pains, the sorrow, the fear and most importantly THE JOY of riding.

But remember next time you think that H.P. entitles you to a higher status on that same scale you are using you are not even a gnat to a Busa.

I guess I'm a bad person. When a scooter drives by in the opposite direction I think "ha!, get a real bike you! You're not getting a wave from me."

I guess I'm a regular @$$hole  :icon_twisted:

Before I started thinking like this I used to wave to scooters, they never waved back so F them  :2guns: :2guns:

I wave at nearly all bikes, scooters, and bicycles...

To get a wave BACK from a scooter, you can't "bike wave" them...  You have to "scooter wave" them...

Scooter wave:  Hand up high (like you're signalling to go left: L) and hand flapping back and forth like you've just smashed your fingernail.

About 30% of the time, they'll wave back...

Most scooterists are too self-involved or too clueless to wave back...  Usually too busy trying to figure out if they know you.

It just that such a large portion of people are @$$hole bikers that it generally startles the shaZam! out of them...

And getting a wave back is nice, but not required. It says something about someone who knows (i.e. Harley wannabe) but does not wave back.

When I was a bicycle-only scrub Id ride out in industrial NW Portland and a Harley guy waved at me once. It tripped me out.

I actually didn't figure out the motorcycle wave until after I had the GS, I took it up to the hills over Portland.

"Hey, other motorcycles. Yay."

"Did that guy just... wave at me? no way... I'm just imagining things."

Eventually it became obvious there was a "motorcycle wave", after I had been an @$$hole and not waved back to like 5 other riders, even though I was only going like 35. And then it made me feel really good.  :icon_razz:

almost 100% of the people in VA that ride scooters outside the city llimits are riding them because they had to many DUI's we call them Drunk mobiles here. and I am not waving to some idiot who lost his license for drunk driving.   the city is a little different with all the college kids, but they are a whole different bread and wouldnt wave to a motorcyclist to save thier lives. Their lives revolve around vespas.  :dunno_white:
