Title: Battery gets disconnected when I start the bike
Post by: newbiker1 on December 15, 2006, 05:44:14 PM
A weird thing is happening on my bike.
I charged a battery and placed it in the bike. When I turn the key to the on position the lights glow brightly and the horn goes well. But as soon as I press the start button I hear a flick sound and the battery somehow gets disconnected.!! No lights no horn...
I removed the key and turned it to on position again.. But there were no lights or hors.

I removed the battery connection and placed it back again. On inserting the key the lights go on well everything seems fine till I hit the start button when the battery gets disconnected from the system again. Does anyone know what is going on ?
Thank you.

So it's not getting disconnected physically, nor is the fuse burnt.  Fascinating.  I would suspect the fuse, but then what's causing the fuse to get burnt.

Battery connection is probably not clean (corroded, dirty, etc..).  It happens to me on my car.  There's enough of a connection to run the electrics, but when that big jolt comes to start the engine, it cooks the small connection you actually have between the battery post and your terminal, just like a fuse.  You could probably wiggle it and get your lights to come back on, and it might actually start the engine.

The best thing to do is clean up the terminals and posts really well, use some baking soda solution if you have that grubby battery acid growth.  Then reattach your terminals nice and tight.  Then wash your hands, because the battery posts are lead.

Also check the ground connections.

:cheers:

@Chuck
Thank you. Your suggestion worked like a charm. The wire battery was not well connected so when I cleaned the connections and fixed it completely after removing dirt and clogs the bike started well.

thanks john for ur suggestion.

Glad to help.  I'm glad others can learn from my mistakes.
