Title: which front sprockets have shoulders
Post by: indestructibleman on December 17, 2006, 03:27:43 PM
i know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but i've been unable to find the answer i need by searching.

i'm replacing the sprockets on my 94.  the sprocket i got from Dennis Kirk (JTF516.15 80-985-15) has a shoulder on it.  the sprocket on the bike does not.

can someone tell me what part number i need for a sprocket that's totally flat?

alright.  i might be in the process of answering my own question here.  the sprocket i'm taking off says Sunstar 325 on it.

i'm going to assume that makes it the 32516 that Kerry has listed at http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Chains&Sprockets.txt (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Chains&Sprockets.txt)

he has that listed as 89-93.  looks like there might be some overlap here.  thereis no added spacer and the sprocket seems to fit tight with the circlip so the older style seems to be right.

going by Kerry's list, i'm assuming that JTF565-15 will also not have the shoulder.

I know that JT Sprockets have shoulders.

From what I remember is that up to '93 came without shoulders, and later(94+) used shoulders. If I remember correctly you should use one with shoulders since it is a '94, but if it doesn't fit right thats not good.

You can get them without shoulders by looking the parts up for a pre-'93 bike, if thats what you think you need

JT Sprockets:

89-93   http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=4756&p=

94-02   http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=4757&p=

04-06   http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=4758&p=

Don't know why they have seperate listing for the 04-06, they are same sprocket numbers as the 94-02.  Maybe because there was no 03 model in US.

I've used the Sprocket Specialist sprocket without the hub on both my 97 and my 02 GS's without any problems.  The hub goes towards the inside if you use the one with the hub..

Sprocket Specialists lists their 504 sprocket without hub for all 89-03 GS's, it's the one I used on the 97 and 02 GS's.

thanks for the references, Jack.

does anyone have any reference relating to frame numbers and years or anything like that?

i'm just curious because my bike is a 1994 (or at least that's what it says on the title) and it seems to have the older type sprocket.  i'm wondering if the change was made mid year.

i haven't taken the sprocket out of it's packaging, as i figure that'll make returning it smoother, but i'm pretty sure the extra width won't fit on the shaft.

The JT drawings show the sprocket with hub is 8.8 mm wide = about 11/32" wide.  Just remove your sprocket and measure if there is room for the one with the hub.

hey Pablo,
things have been going pretty well.  i'm probably just here on a fly by night basis though.  i had to get out of the OT section and i generally don't know enough to give advice here, so i just pop in when i have problems.
hope everything's well.
