Title: ...i fell...
Post by: porsche4786 on December 17, 2006, 08:33:41 PM
So I spent all day today helping my bud pick up a couple bikes, a 1977 GS 750 and a GS750 parts bike, took about 4 hours of my time or so. Anyway, I went to his house a little later after I helped him, then we were putting together his carb and he needed to go to the hardware store to get a screw. So I said I was going to go home and get my car because it was getting cold out and possible a little icy. I didn't get more than a quarter mile away from his house, I was making a left hand turn and when I was just thru the intersection the back end of the bike came around, nothing I could do, I think what made this happen was the cold slightly icy/wet thick white painted lines for the crosswalk. So I slid a bit, not sure how far. While I was sliding/falling I was extremely worried about the bike. After I stopped I said 'f%$k' really loud, then looked for cars, expecting somebody to stop and help me get it up. Nobody stopped, and this was on a very busy street 2 lanes in each direction. So I walked over to it and gave it a shot, then said wow this is heavy, and gave it another go and up it came. Thankfully somebody stopped in the lane I was in to block traffic so I could walk the bike to a driveway for a school, and somebody honked and he drove off. I checked my bike over and didn't look too bad. Made a few calls, somebody stopped and asked if I needed anything he said he rides a harley yada yada yada. My dad showed up, I rode it around the parking lot and decided to ride it home, which was about 1 mile away maybe. So here I am and this is the damage....and boy am I mad. As you can see the only part of me that got anything was my knee, my right hand hurts a little on the side. Any of this stuff I should replace...clothing wise, I'm going to fix the bike perfect except for the tank dent? I'll probably go ahead and get another jacket and gloves (i don't like the "i went down" look).

FIRST OFF, THE MOST IMPORTANT STUFF (MY BIKE!!!)

this will probably wax out, there is a little scutt on the fairing, not sure if it's from this or not, maybe from me picking up the bike I don't really know.

Yeah, good thing your ok. The same day I went down I was thinking about wearing tennis shoes instead of boots... :nono: Boots saved my ankle and the foot.

Ride with proper gear, people make comments some times but its ok. Your prepared for things like this and the gear did its job.

how did you end up with the rash on the knee if you were wearing the leather pants? Do they not fit right?

none of your gear looks like it needs replacing. I'd wait till you found a good deal before replacing if you feel you need to. Bike parts all can stay except the clutch lever. I was in your shoes after my first crash and I didnt replace any of it except what I needed to ride-clutch lever in your case-then kept an eye out on the RR forums and ebay for good deals on the rest.

Glad you're okay.

well, i cant fit in the size smaller, and the next size up is too big. i was wearing sweat pants, jeans, then leather overpants. and i'm replacing the sliders, cause the frame slider is bent, and the spool won't work the way it got scraped i dont believe. clutch lever is cheap (ebay), rear passenger peg is cheap (ebay), mirror is fairly cheap (ebay), trans cover not sure yet.. i'm going to see how much an autobody shop would want to pull out that little ding.
my knee sure hurts more now after the pain killers ran out.

look around at different brands. they all fit differently. you might find one that fits better in your size. I had the same problem with my pants too (a-stars) but I went the smaller size even though its a tight fit (whats sexier than a man in tight leather anyway, LOL?) but it works.

Thats the reason I went with custom fitted stuff. You can get custom fitted 2-pc suits. check out syedleathers.com (download their brochure). least expensive place I found that also came highly recommended...just a thought.

I agree about the slider-didnt realize it was tweaked. the rear spool looks like its just cosmetic though.

Just wanted to emphasize, for the less experienced who might read this thread, the cause of the accident.  Cross walk/intersection paint can be very slippery when wet!  Same goes for manhole covers, metal expansion joints, etc.

Best practice if it's not totally dry out is to go across such obstacles straight.  This can make for some awkward maneuvering, but it'll keep you upright

I was planning on getting the A* track pants to go along with my A* jacket that luckily I didn't crash test yet. But We'll see. The seam on that joe rocket one isn't looking too good, I can just make the excuse that I need another new jacket.  :)

Like I said to you earlier Kev, just get one of those paintless dent removers (like Ding King) for $20 and pull the dent out yourself. It's easy and works, and you won't have to pay a large chunk of cash at a body shop to get them to do the exact same thing.
