Title: Ontario winters suck.. but I can work on the bike !
Post by: Mr Hyde on December 20, 2006, 05:43:22 PM
Hey there.. havent really posted much on here, but I've been reading alot !

This past Feb I bought my 05 gs500 (nekid, they still sell them nekid in Canada) and put on 5000 km's this season learning how to ride the bike..
This year I've already put on a F-15 windscreen, V&H exhaust and a jetkit...  Its still not quite where I want it. But unfortunatly the insurance on a 600cc would make the whole motorcycle adventure a little less appealing to my wallet, so I've decided to jsut do up the GS to where I'd like it...  so for this winter I'm planning on...

-convert to F model..The dealership in Waterloo is great ! and is pricing everything out for me to do the conversion.
-15 tooth front sprocket
-Katana rear wheel
-new RADIAL tires.. ( still trying to figure out WHAT to use here )
-progressive front springs
-rim tape
MAYBE some led's.. not sure on how "bling " i want it.. i wanna ride the bloody bike, not show off at Timmies.

I'm going to be getting the fairings without the decal package, so I'm going to figure out some decals of my own to put on.. I'd like a dragon on the side.. but it will take some time to figure this out.. I prolly wont ride it till April, so I have lots of time to sort this out..

I want to re-tweak the jets as well because I seem to have a dead spot around 5000rpm.. any suggestions there ???

hopefully theres a few more riders in the southern ontario area and we can hook up for a ride in the spring..
oh.. and I'll post pictures as I go.. :P
Cheers

people do that :dunno_white:

as for your stumble at 5k watch what fuel you use .... just use 87 octane and don't use sunoco ,mine stumbles runs like shite ,it likes esso or shell ....the sunoco has the ethanol in it,not jetted for that

my 2cents

Sounds like a fun winter.  In in New Brunsiwck and still riding pretty much every day.  Although my wife thinks Im nuts.

I use Esso for fuel so far for my 06 GSF and havent had any dead zones.  I only use regular as well which is 87 octane.

Im wondering how much the fairings cost.  I have an F but Im curious.

I want to add the rim tape this summer and maybe some LEDs but Im thinking that the lights are illegal here.  I guess Ill call the cop shop and see whats legal here.  I put my scooter Givi top case on.  It looks ugly, to me, but is handy as hell.  Im also going to get some side sport bags and some good bike boots.  Im only using sneakers right now, doh!

The dealership in Waterloo rocks?!??!?!  :cookoo:  :bs:

Anyways, I live in Kitchener; it'd be cool to hook up sometime. PM me your email addy, and maybe we can arrange to meet up to check out eachother's bikes even if the snow is flying. I'd be interested to see your setup :)

WOW! There seems to be more Ontarians than I originally thought!  We should organize an all Ontario GS500 ride! It'll have to be early in the spring... I might be picking up a new bike in the spring... too bad my bike fund is based on snow...

No complaining this year!  If you really want to ride you can still ride here in Ontario.  We've had a fantastic riding season.   I remember having to park the bike last year in November because of all the snow on the roads.  I don't think the bike is going into storage at all this year.. maybe just a bit of stabil for the few weeks we get snowed in.  :)

Hmm, if you guys want to cross the peace bridge, I live south of Buffalo a little ways.  How bad is the winter up there this year?  It has been unseasonably warm this year besides our one big blizzard.  Kind of strange not to have snow on the ground, I actually have been able to take the bike out a lot!

Port Colborne, Ontario here !

Yeh it has been a great season so far. Riding comfortably in November and December with no snow. Its great.

I put a V&H exhaust on my bike with a K&N replacement filter, didnt do much to the carbs and my bike seems to be performing well. I have an 02' Naked.

If you have an 05' naked why would u switch to a F  :icon_confused: ??

( I would forsure be in for meeting up for a ride next season )

I like the fairings on it.. looks sharp...  its gonna cost me less to buy the fairings NOW than it woulda cost to get the F model in the first place..  :D     yaa the weather has been great still !   too bad i put my bike away a month ago.. grr  oh well.. i'll leave it  ready for riding longer next year...     was ooogling over the bike today at my sisters...   cant wait to start working on it.. :D

You know...after putting my naked GS away just a while ago, and giving her a good cleaning, there is something to be said about having the engine being hidden from clean freak's eyes. Took me 6+ hours to clean and detail her this year!

Mr. Hyde, you may be onto something.
Title: Re: Ontario winters suck.. but I can work on the bike !

A clean engine will run cooler.  I think it's nothing short of being diligent.  :thumb:
And, how much easier it would be to do, without the fairings.
Fairings may hide oil leaks.  Your oil pan has fining, and if that gets dirty, it wont cool the oil as well, or the rest of the engine (oil-cooler notwithstanding).

That wont be a problem when you're going faster tho guys.. :p  ROTFL
more speed + more wind = better cooling.. :P
welll I'mjsut itching to get my stuff in and start working on er'
it would be sooo nice to get the bike out today tho.. its nice out again on boxing day.. sheesh..

now does anyone know any place in southern ontario that does decent graphics ??? I'm not going to get the factory decal kit and want to make up my own stuff... any recomendations???
only another week or so till the motorcycle show at the international centre.. hoping there willbe some decent vendors there and i might pick up a few more things.. SM2's if i'mlucky... sprocket and front fort springs..

Good luck at the show

What springs are you looking to get?
I have a hard time saying this, but any Hardley Ableson bike shop that does paint also does amazing graphics, though I am sure you'll pay for it big time.

I won't be making it. But the T.O show is notorious for having a lot of "stuff," but hard to find anything decent.

Check out the yellow pages. I have heard through the grapevine there is a shop that does really nice graphics, but for the life of me, I can't remember where.

i have a list of what i'm looking for.. we'll see what i find..
how are you liking those prielli sport demons ??? good tire ??  i dont care if i only get a couple seasons out of them for wear.. i jsut want a good tire.. :D
Title: Re: Ontario winters suck.. but I can work on the bike !

I've had the old stock Bridgestone Exedras, Bridgestone BT-45's, and a set of Metzlers (330/550 combo) before going to the Pirelli's. I get about 15000km of good hard riding out of them. Which is about a season and a bit.

They stick like glue, heat up nicely, and are average to a bit below average in the wet. They truely inspire you to take the corners with confidence.

When we meet up next year for a toot, we'll go on the "loop" (Wellington street entrance/off ramps, and Victoria street ent/off ramps) and you'll get a decent idea of how well they stick.

i would like  the idea of being a bit more sticky than the stock tires... i'd like some decent wet road traction cuz i've been coght in the rain a few times and if i take a ride out to the rockies this summe.r.. i'm gona have to prepare for it..   but i definitely want better than the stock tires..  yaa we'll have to grab a pint n shoot the shaZam! sometime in january..  i'l be doing some super shopping at the bike show in a couple weeks.. maybe i'll find some tires there...

Hehehe..... that's hillarious... I haven't been here in quite some time and I find myself in one of the threads.   Yeah, GSrider and I organized a local ride and had about 6 or 8 people that said they'd be there, but nobody showed up.  Oh well, we still had a good ride; eventhough the weather was pretty crappy that day.
So GSrider, still working at the same place?  How's the new house?
Unfortunately I sold my GS, so if you want to organize another ride I'll have to bring my SV650S  :thumb:   But I'm definitely in if you guys are going to do a ride sometime, or even if you want to get together and talk motorcycle stuff.  I'll be heading to the Toronto motorcycle show this weekend.... and dreaming about spring.

Rec - Yep, I'm still over at Bruce and Victoria. Feel free to drop by anytime you see my GS parked out front :)
The house is good, but garage space is becoming limited.

You sold your GS? WHY?!
You were having so much fun tinkering around with it  :cookoo:

Well I was planning on keeping the GS for another year for insurance reasons, but then I came across a really good deal on the SV; and since the insurance was almost the same I just couldn't pass it up.  Unfortunately I don't have the room or money to keep 2 bikes, so the GS had to go.  But after riding the SV, I wouldn't be getting back on the gs anyway... all I can say is  :o what a difference!  The bike is being stored right now and I'm already having withdrawal symptoms.
I actually did stop by your work one time when I saw your bike out front (I believe it was the summer before last).  When I went in and asked for you the guy was like "Umm, he's working right now - what do you want?... I could give him a message, but he can't talk to you while he's at work".  He seemed a little pissy, so I just left.

welll.. i good chunk of the parts came into the dealership late last week and i picked them up today... bit more to go.. :)  i THINK the blue is darker than my bike.. hmm gonna have to check that out at my sisters.. either way.. i like it.. so if the tank is a slightly different shade.. meh..  it usualy has my tank bag on it anyways..  oooh i'm soo excited..
now i'm just gonna have to take my digital camera back  there and take pictures of a new one so I know where all these little brackets go.

I'm up in Peterborough, Ontario and have had the same problem with having put my bike away for the winter.  I've been kicking myself and dying to ride it.  With +10 temperatures this weekend it may just be too much pressure to leave it in the garage.  Count me in for an Ontario Wide Ride!!

question.... I want to put the progressive springs in the front end of my bike.. but I have an 05.. all the listings i've seen on websites show it only up to 02... is this correct?? or are the springs the same  through all the years ??..
next question.. i'm tossed up between getting the michelin pilot powers and the pirelli sport demons..  any idea's on that ??
and lastly.. i'm gonna get a lunchbox k &n ( i have a k&n drop in right now but wanna loose the stock airbox)  i've seen lots of suggestions for  jet settings.. but none for my year.. does it matter ?? should I just order 150 jets ?  I already have a dynojet stg 1 in it right now.. I already have a V&H pipe on it..
Thanks guys n gals

1. As far as I know (Which doesn't count for much) the '05 models have the same parts as all others. Though I'd check with other owners. Better yet, do a quick search on this very site.

2. I know that the Sport Demons will spoon on the stock rims with no problem. If you have a wider rear, well, you might get away with larger tires. I had ordered a new set of buns from Tri City, and they didn't have my front in yet. (110/70/17 Sport Demons) so they threw a Bridgestone BT-014 120/70-17 to suffice until it did come in. (BTW, they were going to charge me for the Bridgey too!  :flipoff:) The larger front tire equated to VERY large chicken strips, even if the front did stick like glue. Personally, I like stock sizing. It's easier to flip the bike from side to side.

3. If you are going to use the lunchbox ru-2970 a/f, I'd get a stage 3 kit. Toss the stage 1 altogether.  FWIW, I am using 142.5 main jet, the needle is a #0982g-80M70s4, clipped 2nd from the top, and the fuel screws are exactly 3 turns out.

Hope that helps...

the fron sizing i was mainly concerened if there would be a balance issues with having a wider tire on the back (150) and not the front....   but if that shouldnt be an issues running a 110/150 combo then that will do just fine..

Logically, it shouldn't matter.
The Suzuki DRZ-400SM has a 120/140 set up, while the CBR-929 has a 120/190 set up.

HEHEHE.. SM2 came in today.. :)  Zero Gravity DB is enroute..  Progressive springs , rear turn signals, and  15tooth sprocket are on order for this or next week.. :D
Already chopped the rest of the undertail off.. most of the fairings and brackets are here..  all starting to come together..  Still thinking about my options with tires.. but we'll see..
Took the headlamp assy and F-16 off this past weekend..  the forks will come off in a week i imagine so I can fab up and weld in the bracket the birdcage bolts to...

Like a kid in a cady store.

made up the bracket for the bird cage this past weekend and welded it on.. got the nose piece put onand hung one of the side panels.. got the Kat wheel painted and ready for rubber...  still waiting on the right side panel to come in  next week i hope.( was on back order ).. got the SM2 put on... WOW.. without even moving its a much nices riding position i thinks.. perhaps next weekend i'll get the left side panel mounted properly with the brackets ( the non F models you have to drill all the bracket holes) and get the progressive springs put in..  And .. ofcourse.. now that i already have everything to put the fairings on.. someone is parting out a blue F model on ebay.. doh

You've been a busy beaver, eh?

All work on my GS is on hold until the weather gets warmer. (-20C?!?!? WTF?!?!?)
I had to put in a heli-coil in my valve cover - finding an M7 kit is hard.
That went fine, and the coil is holding well.

Now I just need to fix up a minor tachometer issue, and set the synchro correctly - but again, that has to wait until the weather decides to warm back up in a few weeks.

Not sure what happened to this thread, read the first page or so...

Bought my bike in april/may 2006. Since then I've seen ONE other GS500 around town. Guess there were a few more in hiding.

Some of you locals want to go for a ride, gimme a pm.

sounds like the bike is coming along well.  You'll have fun this season.

can't wait to get out again.  I went until the first week of Jan. this year (which was crazy for around here), but still can't wait until the snow is gone.

I grew up in Cambridge, and am now an hour over in London (Ontario).  I'll look for the meet thread in the spring and maybe will meet up with you guys some time.

Gookie, WREX, MrHyde, I am making the meetup thread in a few days. Just got up for work
Danielah used to post here - he had a late model GS-F that was black/red/silver, though I haven't seen him post here in a long time. Recreational_Anxiety has gone to the dark side and got a SV-650.

When I bought my GS in 2000, I was the only one with one in the tri-cities. Now, it seems that everywhere I go, I see another one.
