OK, i was jetting the carbs today (thanks again wingbolt  ) and everything went fine.. Then i came to taking out the stock pilots. They are stripped and i have no idea how anyone gets these out. I think im screwed. I have to put it back together with just the washers and mains.. and im pissed. :x
But anyhow, does anyone know how to get these out? I dont care if i ruin the pilots, its the carb bodies im worried about. Thanks!
Can't you just drill them out?
-Anti
Edit: I don't mean all the way.... as you drill they will spin out.
Rashad, you should be able to drill and "easy-out" the pilot jets. I would stongly suggest that you use a drill press so you don't drill to far. A small easy out should work. There are already the little holes in the jets, just enlarge the hole a little.
As Anti said, maybe a reverse drill spinning counter clockwise may work too.
Good luck on this one.
Paul
Thanks, but this kind of stuff is my weak point. I hate having to use a drill on something this fragile. Ive never used an easy out either. I guess ill have to go that route though.
I had the same problem with one of my pilots. I was changing the jets and the pilot on one of my carbs stripped. I didn't want to chance drilling so I had to take apart my other carb and replace my 40 with the stock jet. I have some easy outs now, so the next time I take the carbs apart I may try to extract the stripped pilot. I'm still nervous about damaging the carb body though.

yeah we need the guru in here to assure us that he has done this, and its easy and safe :thumb:
Don't use a drill, you could fill the passages with tiny chips of brass.
Go get a very small screw extractor and gently screw it into the pilot jet.
It will probably come out very easily.
Ok also.. i just searched and im still not sure...
Are my 125.7 mains adequate for a V&H pipe??
DOh! i mean 127.5s... and they are mikuni

Good point james.
Never saw this post till now...My carbs had bad pilots in it...I didn't check...stoopid me...I have stripped it and drilled it out in the past but I have not in the last 5 years and 5 bikes stripped one...The right tools make a big diff. Yea you need to clean the crap out of it...if you drill it but dont worry just damaging the head you have made enough shavings to last a life time of cleaning. Atleast with the pilot out you can get a Q-tip in there and clean it well unlike now. It can be cleaned so just drill it carefully.Left handed drills work great but they are hard to find.
Cool.
Srinath.
Can u explain the method of drilling it in more detail? Do i just drill into it normally, and then put it in reverse to back it out?
OK Snap on is supposed to sell left handed drills. If you find those great. Just put it on the drill press and run it in reverse and as the tool bites in the jet it will catch it and take it out. I feel so bad not checking these before sending it to you. Else you drill with the regular small drill running the right way (screwing in) and then take it out with an easy out.
Cool.

ahh dont worry man.. it happens. I dont even know what an easy out is... ill have to get one.
A trick I have found that works well to avoid mangling the head of the jets (I know these ones were pre-magled). Get the carb on a firm surface, top off, and give the jet a solid shot with a drift and rubber hammer, or even the appropriate straight bladed screw driver and a rubber hammer.
If the jet doesn't move fairly easily on my first try with the right sized and nice new bladed screw driver, I just give it a shot. So far it's worked every time for me.
i tried that  ... didnt seem to work.. i even tried penetrating oil... no go. Ill have to try drilling next.. with that crazy easy out.

Easy out's aren't as easy as they sound. I had to easy out a fitting from my brother's tranny (on his truck) and that easy out wouldn't bite for $#!T. I finally got it out, but it sucked. They do work though, they may just take some time. You can get them at most auto part's stores (they'll probably be labelled "Screw Extractors". The one's that I have look similar to reverse groove drill bits (kind of). To use them just tap the end into the hole that you may or may not have to drill in the jet, then put a small wrench on the square end and turn the jet out. The extractor should wedge itself into the hole and grab the jet. As you turn the extractor the jet should turn also. Easy out as pie.
John L.
Now for something as delicate as a jet and a soft metal (brass) I would just tap the screw extractor into the 'hole' and then use a small adjustable wrench to rotate it counterclockwise. Just as DrtRydr said.
yeah, that drtryder has some good info sometimes :thumb:
...... sometimes...
eh.... once in a blue mooon.
*looks outside*
"OMG!!! guys!! THE moon is BLUE!!"
The same thing happened to me so I took a star screwdriver hammered it in a bit then unscrewed it. I had to but on new pilots anyways. Now I know to use the right screwdriver for the job next time.
ya know, this might be my fault.. i used one of those really small screwdrivers that come in the little plastic case. They sit in a staggered position in there.. about five of them.. I think theyre cheap though. Only ones i had that would fit in there!!
What kinds of screwdrivers do you guys use that fit into that tiny spot?? :o

I am also curious about this particular question as I have also had the same problem as Rashad......... man-whore that he is.
By the way, thanks for the compliment Rashad. In response I'd like to say that I've heard nothing but good things about your "man-gina". All the ladies you service say your the best "he-Buddha Loves You man-whore" they've ever had. You must have the best "he-pu$$y" ever.
Sorry, got a little carried away with the Deuce Bigalow Male Gigalo there. My bad.

Yes its called a screwdriver...Buy it at Home depot...to fit the hole. Big orange rubber handle...cant miss...
Cool.
Srinath.
I tried to borrow screwdrivers from 3 different people to get my pilot's out and no one had one that would fit in the hole that they sit in, not a good one anyway. I have one similar to Rashad's, but it just stripped out the jet. I was convinced that no one made good screwdrivers in that size, and so where the three other people I tried to borrow screwdrivers from. Cheapo screwdrivers just funked everything up.
John L.
Fit them before you buy at home depot. Or take your esisting screw driver and grind it to fit. It has to fit in tight and not hit the wall. A screwdriver is to be modified to fit. Then label it and use it only for the pilots.
Cool.
Srinath.
I almost stripped the head of one pilot with a small screwdriver that wasn't catching well enough. Then I used a #1 flathead screwdriver bit on an extension which barely fit into the hole. It came out easily with no damage.
Hmm.. i have an impact driver that will take ANYthing out... i wonder if they make a bit that small....
Its a hand driver.. and the cool thing is, you dont have to hit it all the time.. it actually just helps to have that extra beefy handle and the piston movement helps when just using your hands on it.
By the way, that man0gina stuff... just uncalled for.. your on my shaZam!-list Drty boy!! :x
HEY HEY! Don't get mad at me there Rash. You can't be a Man-Whore without a Man-gina. :nono: It's just not natural without one. Sorry bro, but that's just the way it is. :thumb:
John L.
PS- No, not the shaZam! list!!!! :o
