Title: HOW TO LOWER YOUR 2004 YAMAHA YZF-R6.

Ok Folks.

I completed the procedure today.  I must admit...  It's nice to be able to touch the ground with BOTH feet. Granted, I still can't flat-foot both feet, but I didn't wanna lower her TOO much.

Here's the steps I took. (I may have done some unneccessary steps, but I didn't wanna f%$k anything up.)

STEP 1]
Remove to lower fairings on both sides.

STEP 2]
loosen the two bolts to the dogbones.

STEP 3]
Get your hydraulic jack and cover the end of the jack with a soft cloth.  Using this cloth as a "platform", lift the bike "up" right where the two exhaust pipes converge into one.  This will TIP the bike over more to the clutch side, so be careful in this step.

STEP 4]
Once the bike is "supported" a bit, pull the bolts out from the dogbones.

STEP 5]
Insert the adjustable lowering link.  If the original holes are farther apart than the lowering links, jack up the bike a little more until the holes line up.

STEP 6]
Insert the bolts into both holes and lightly screw on the nuts.

STEP 7]
Lower and remove the hydraulic jack.

STEP 8]
Sit on bike and test the height.  Adjust as needed.

STEP 9]
Once you get the correct height desired, tighten all bolts and reinstall the lower fairings.

VIOLA!!!

I thought the same thing, but when I got it in the mail yesterday, I was shocked...

I think it doesn't look that strong in the picture because the holes are much bigger in proportion that the item itself.

There are bearings and bearing covers that have to go inside where the bolts go...  The item is MUCH bigger than it looks.

What ... you people are crazy.
I bent up steel flat bar into a loop around a steel rod (OK OK my welder did) to make them for his brothers R1. Then put a pipe of the right size in the loop and weld them shut and weld the pipe to the loop. Thin steel is fine, it takes straight tension but we still used some good thick one. You can go double also. And weld it on the first one. OK this is adjustable ... this wasn't.
Oh yea ... if you need sheite lowered, buy a bike that fits ... your ability and your riding style and your comfort level. I knew of a 5 ft 2 chick who's handle a ZX 7 just fine.
My welders 6 ft brother was scared of that damn r1 and was too chicken to admit it.
I've also bought an SV with all the padding the the seat removed ... like WTF ... and the newb that bought it, crashed on the test ride.
Dont buy bling ... buy what you will use.

I don't think i would buy a bike that i would need to lower. I don't trust or understand how lowering kits work but i guess it would really fook up something like handling/steering etc... Thankfully i havn't found a bike yet that has been what i would consider too tall. 5'11"

Well, for us "vertically challenged" (I'm 5'6"), we need to get a little help.

Just imagine...

If I DIDN'T lower it, how mush worse my lowside would have been... :o

If you need to put your feet down, I mean if you really really need to ... buy a freaking cruiser ... or a bicycle or something and learn the physics of riding.
Yea I reach terra firma with most things, but on my neighbors DR ... I dont, and I had no problem riding that thing. Yea keeping up with freeway traffic was PITA ... the blooming thing is geared to get out of ruts and climb hills, not to keep up with grandpa's Oldsmobile Roadyacht on the freaking freeway. Can you say redline ...
I will buy a DR650 or somehting that actually can make highway speeds easily ... maybe a old transalp or something or an ascot ... its pure fun ...

I have had plenty thank you very much, and I am slow, horribly horribly slow.
I however also run commute hours (so I am subject to tons of stressed out commuters while being one myself), run bald tires (like unless its completely smooth or has cord showing, I'd use it ... and I ride 10 different bikes, making for a very fuzzy memory. Like yesterday on my savage I ran out of gas. Yes I ran it dry. Why, I rode the maxim and virago for the last few days and I filled them up, and it never struck me before leaving home to look in the tank ... And that damn thing has no trip meter reset button which I always set to 0 when I fill.
Anyway, I have plenty of excuses, but not reaching the ground is not a reason. A crash is a crash, and even if you do reach the ground you can crash - actually that illustrates the point pretty well dont you think. So there you have it. I crash because I dont know to ride too well (or have up to date running gear) and reaching the ground has very little to do there cos I reach just fine in all bikes.
BTW Cruisers are harder to crash, but I managed that also a couple times. Lower CG and longer wheel base means it takes more time to spin around and gives you time to correct it.

I wouldn't do it for the $5 profit that you get.  Not worth the headache.

I run commute hours, my tires aren't bald, but they are stock at about 8k miles, and I suck at riding, too....we have a lot in common...  :laugh:  ;)
