Title: What happened to the UK gs site?
Post by: GeeP on December 28, 2006, 11:48:23 PM
I went to take my monthly look at gs500e.co.uk and the home page says the site is down until further notice as of 12/16/06.

What's going on?

yeah lev shut it down, it was costing him too much to run, sad really as it had some really good info, and the guys were all friendly as.
hopefully he'll have it up and running some time next year

Damn.  I'm suprised it was never mentioned here!

Any idea how much he needed?

That's a shame.

no idea? he didnt have adds on it for ages, which i think could have helped to pay for it, it was just donations from the regulars that had kept it going, i think if he had been quicker with getting adverts and sponsored links it would have stayed open,
but the site was using too much band width and took up too much room to keep it at the low price that he had been paying.
hopefully he'll get it back online later on next year, he has everything stored, so no info will be lost, but the faqs were a gold mine of info as you said.
:(

That's sux! We got to see the gs on the other side of the pond... Those guys rocked the gs out! Make us, the usa guys(and girls) look bad!
Hope that doesn't happen here. Or the mods let's us know...I'd kick in something!

it was the possibility of that happening here that caused me to "archive" a bunch of info from the last...wait, it was like 3 generations of servers for gstwin.com ago. When we lost the first one (that I was aware of) I found the free tripod site to host that info. htt[://pantablo500.tripod.com/

Its too bad about Levs site. He really did have a ton of useful information on there and the UK guys really did rock the gs big. I'm shocked really, as this site doesnt take a ton of money and John keeps it running based on the small donations and small revenue from the magazine and cllymer manual links. I'd like to think he considered other alternatives to lower his costs. Or maybe he needed to stop for other reasons. Funny, John is hardly here these days and the site lives on...

Why not contact Lev and see about combining the 2 sites?

we could make a sub-forum for the UK guys just like we have the aussie one under meet & greet. would have to talk to lev about it. I wonder if his email here would work, since he's a member here as well? will look into it.

(edit: I emailed him but the email he's registered with here is a gs500.co.uk address [ie from his website] so I dont know if its a valid address any longer. will keep you updated if I hear back).

That's an interesting idea.  Let's see if we can help out the UK guys.  If you can get ahold of him let's pass the pot and see what we can scratch up.

I was planning to add some of that great FAQ info to the wiki, but hadn't gotten around to it yet

If you get a hold of Lev, can you ask him if I can somehow download an archive of that FAQ?  Or if anyone has it (hmmmnz, perhaps?), can you forward it to me?

What happened to the GS500 in the UK?

The Brit magazines never were too kind to the GS which is understandable since the have some real nice 500cc twins from Honda and Kawi.  Seems the GS is completely gone from the latest Suzuki site.

Replaced by the new naked 600cc Gixer maybe?  Where's our GSR600?

http://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/bikes/?sector=onroad

Suzuki Canada still has both the naked and the fully faired GS's.

Yeah, I noticed it was missing from the 2007 line-up here in the UK.  I have not read anything in the bike-press to confirm its been dropped but it wouldnt surprize me to learn that after 18yrs on the market it has finally died a death. My local dealer has had the same yellow 500f in the showroom for about 6 months now and he just cant shift it even at a break-even price. He tells me all his customers want SV`s and Bandits.

Anyone missing gs500e.co.uk should have a look around this site.

I heard back from Lev. He's had a fair bit of trouble with the host server which I wont get into the details of here. He's also had lots going on in his life (new job, house, etc) but suffice it to say he fully intends to have it online again, probably in a few months.

In the meantime I am looking into the possibility of setting up a temporary home for them here, such as we have for the aussies...at least so they can keep in touch.

I got so disappointed with the UK site not being up anymore that in protest I traded-in my K2 GS500 for a '05 Black Kawasaki Z750S. http://www.bikepics.com/members/cmit/05z750s/ (http://www.bikepics.com/members/cmit/05z750s/)

yea there are a few sweet naked bikes that we dont get here in the US, mainly because the naked market is much bigger in Europe. If the GS is dying out in Europe, my guess is it's because they put a goofey-looking faring on it.

Must say I don't like the fairing on the new gs. It makes the bike look small.

The GS 500 has been witdrawn from the UK line up due the the Euro3 Emissions regulations.
For the same reason the air/oil cooled, carburated Bandits have gone too, the 2007 bandits are fuel injected and are water cooled.

A shame really, the engines without cooling fins just don't look as nice.
Better performance and economy might make up for that a little I suppose.

As for a GS replacement? I guess the GSR600 or the Bandit 650 are the nearest things in the lineup these days.
