Title: getting reeeaaallly itchy...
Post by: ledfingers on January 10, 2007, 01:51:06 AM
I've been slowly rebuilding my bike since the accident in oct. due to a tight budget (i wrecked a week before i moved from san diego to north of san francisco, so money wasn't in excess...) and now the end is in sight and i'm getting antsy. As soon as it's done i can finally sell my stupid cage and just ride the bike for a month or two while i save more money for a new(to me) car. But GOD is it hard going without a motorcycle for this long, i hate it!

anywho, the other purpose is to tell you guys what i'm doing to it:

clip-ons
short-stalk w/ clear lens turn signals
new forks (04 tubes, 91 springs/spacers. the springs were different and i didn't have the 04 spacers so i just used my original springs and spacers)
new shift lever
Paint (just started paint prep, i'm doing 4 coats of metalic black, 2 of dark blue, then "airbrushing" with a slightly lighter blue to create a "watery" effect. then with silver i'm doing a sort of half arrow stripe down the side only it's going to fade into blue in the center of the stripe. I might do some sort of ghosting with the "GS500E" in the stripe on the rear cowl, but we'll see...)
i REALLY want dominators, but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to afford them...
new guages (stock) when i find them
new key (DOH!)
new brakes
stainless steel brake lines
buell flyscreen (thanks to CB2RN)

eventually i'll repaint the motor, re-jet the carbs and do exhaust and k&n, but those aren't major priorities since the next car i'm getting will need struts, springs and sway-bars so i can get back envolved with the BMW club and do more autocrosses. (riding a motorcycle actually improved my driving in a cage. You're thinking about so much more on a bike when you're going fast that going fast in a car feels so easy in comparison and i found myself almost over driving the car for something more to do.)

this is really pointless to post now, but i'm excited so i did it anyway. Besides, now YOU GUYS will be excited for pictures of it (hehe, maybe thats just wishful thinking...)

what kind of springs did you pull out, my guess is that since it came with "race" clipons that you have some upgraded springs

No, the guy never put this front end on his bike. it was just a stock one, stock guts, he had a local shop rebuild the tubes then it sat for a while until he sold his race bike and was cleaning out the leftovers. I'll take a picture of the size difference.

i did a fenderectomy today. I didn't do the "extreme" fendectomy, i just trimmed off the ugly. Then i went in to the local suzuki place to get some prices and started layin the tracks to get the hot girl behind the counter to go for a ride with me when it's done. I'm a sucker for a girl thats all inked up and she had some awesome skin art. Woo beautiful women, HOORAY for beautiful bikes!!

it's alive!!!!!!!!!!! i finally had it put together enough to ride it yesturday. Still have to get mounts for the dominator headlights and make the buell flyscreen look good with the dominators, then paint, all while rebuilding/rejetting the carbs and changing the valve cover gasket. It felt SO GOOD to be back on the bike though. rides straight as an arrow, new front end handles as beautifully as i'd expect from a gs, love the feel of the clip-ons, god i haven't been this giddy since i bought the bike.....

Dude, congrats! I just got mine back together from the wreck back in August today. Got the chain adjusted, everything's tight, nothing's rattling off, w00t!

It feels good being back on two, even if it is only like 40 degrees... oh well, RIDE TIME!

Enjoy! And update us with pics...

I also added clipons, and I need to change my valve cover gasket, it's leaking gross stuff..

I hate you guys.  It will be getting into the mid-30s here in the midwest next week, and I'm thinking OooooOOOoooo I could ride in that.... except 1. my bike is hundreds of miles away in my parents garage since I've been moving around, and 2. there's like 2 feet of snow that are going to start melting in that weather and there's no way I'm riding my bike through the rivers and lakes of salt and slush that will take over the roads   I guess I'll have to be more patient

Oh, and congrats on getting the bike back together and running (to both)
