Title: jack lift

So I bought a jack for my bike the other day so I could do some work on it. Is it ok for me to use the thick black pipes underneath the bike (exhaust?) to lift it up? I remember reading somewhere that it was ok. If not, where underneath the bike should I place the rubber feet of the jack?

I would not do that my self, if you can see if you can have it rest on the frame rails to the left and right of the exhaust

I use one on my dads street bike (no center stand) and my motocross bikes. My dads bike is a '77 GS 750 so the exhaust runs under the bike. Since i cant jack it up directly on the frame rails because of this i just use blocks.

Providing your using an actual motorcycle / ATV jack. Put a block along the bottom of each frame rail that is thick enough to clear the exhaust and jack up on the blocks. The block on the exhaust side may have to be on an angle to run along side of the exhaust, since half the frame rail maybe blocked by exhaust. Also you may have to shim each side depending on how the bike tilts as you jack it up.

If I can jack up a 600 pound GS750 you can jack up the little 500.

Do you have an actual motorcycle/ ATV jack ?

yeah I have an actual motorcycle/atv jack. I will see what I can do using some blocks.

UPDATE: just looked at it... seems very hard to do with blocks as I have the F model, at least without taking off the fairings. Maybe I should do that first?

If you can still return the jack, do it and by a front and rear stand, they are like $120 for the set and are as Borat says...Very Nice

I can't return the jack, but I finally got the bike off the ground... Was quite tricky. Put some blocks under the frame rails. Though one of the four isn't actually carrying any weight... I only have 2 ratchet tie downs and a couple locking ones... I used the ratchets on the front, to get a different block that wasn't supporting weight to support weight. Quite stable nonetheless though. Now all I have to do is... everything else.
