Title: Dumped the bike last night, 5 mph tight U-turn on wet pavement
Post by: tussey on January 23, 2007, 08:30:43 AM
Well I dumped my bike last night. Doing a 5-10mph 120 degree turn and leaned in pretty far. I would have been fine except it had just lightly rained so the road was at it's slickest point. Just as I'm about to straighten up, the bike just gently slides out from underneath me and slides about two feet and wedges itself under a parked car. I land on my knee then my butt. I calmly got up, killed the engine, checked myself. Then proceeded to get my bike unstuck, a guy came over and asked me if I was ok, which was nice. I had full gear+jeans, only damage I suffered is a dirtied up jean and a VERY lightly scraped knee (just turned the skin pink).

No really damage to the bike, just some scrapes to the plastics, pegs, and engine. Not like my bike is in mint condition anyways. Knocked my mirrors and clutch assembly around on the bar, put everything back to it's spot inspected the bike and road off a little humbled.

Could have been worse  :thumb: Stay safe guys.  :2guns:

Same thing happened to me last year except I was in the dirt. I hit the ground pretty hard but managed to keep the GS from harm. All that happened was my mirror got out of adjustment and I got some dirt on my exhaust. It showed me how careful I have to be and how fortunate I am to not have any damage done.

Good to hear your safe! I did almost the same thing. The abrasion transfers right through the jeans, which led me to getting knee protectors. I suggest the Icon's. They fit under jeans, are totally comfortable, and trust me, if you go down any faster than 7mph you WILL need them to save your legs from scaring and your knees from serious injury. .02

Same thing almost happened to me a couple months ago on old tires, except it was with a pile on pine needles when I was doing a U late at night. Front wheel had plenty of traction, but rear wheel swung around hard and almost tossed me off (only at ~5mph,  :dunno_white:. Had to plant my right leg down to keep the bike from toppling over. I literally stood there for like a minute with the bike leaned over 60degrees, supported by my right leg, before I was able to get it straightened. On the bright side, it convinced me to get new tires

no I it didn't touch his body paint, the bike was just wedged under the black piece of pastic under the  bumper, which was undamaged.

I did slash his tires though.  :icon_twisted:
