OK I'm about to lose my mind.
I've had the whole thing pulled apart and the valves done. Timing chain checks out as OK and all the gears look fine yet I have an evil ticking noise.
It gets worse when you let off throttle and use engine braking. It sounds vaguely reminiscent of a garage door chain working.
Yes happens when the bike is still.
I'm thinking of replacing the chain even though it checks out. (What else could make this noise?)
If necessary I will replace the engine.
(Oh yeah, save the "Save your money!" Speech for someone else. My GS is worth more than money to me. Period.)
If you just had the valves done, and it wasn't clicking before, I'd guess it's a shim issue. You might have too much clearance on one of your valve shims. Also, you might have a shim in there that's not the right diameter. I've put a 29mm shim in instead of a 29.5mm shim, and had some clicking going on. Get one of those cheap auto stethescopes to pinpoint the noise. Best of luck to you.
+1 on the GS being invaluble. I'm going to ride mine till the wheels fall off. Hopefully I wont be on the bike when they fall off.

It was clicking before the valve job. The reason I went in before the scheduled time and was like "WTF?"
Dude ... Cam chain tensioner. When you're turning the motor over with valve cover off, did you notice the chain sag a shade even between the 2 cam sprokets ??? Yea that.
Or cam shaft end play.
In which case ignore it post haste, unless its close to 1 mm+ then put a shim in it. BTW you'd have a racket at .35 mm, and it will almost wear to 1mm in the next 65K miles ... that's right 65,000 more miles. Now at 35K mine was at ~.35mm, at 48K it was under .5 mm and the noise was insane. I welded up the sides of the cam tower, and shaved it so the gap dropped to .1mm. whisper quiet again ... and totally overkill.

yeah it might be the camshaft end play. If it is ticking with no rhythm then that is likely the source. Mine does it ever so slightly, nothing like some of the clips i have heard, i thank Suzuki and their wavy washer for that :laugh: :laugh:
Nope I have an endplay noise when it is cold, but not when it has warmed up, and this noise is like a garage door chain. (You know the non power ones.)

Exhaust leak near the engine? A small one will sound like a "tick tick tick tick tick" and can be louder on deceleration. Just a guess.

Well, and the closer you get to the engine, the more it sounds like something mechanical rather than an exhaust leak.
Sounds like a bad Counter Balancer to me.Thats Kinda what Mine sounded like but When I tore into it it was the Top Bearing getting Spun Around Under the Bottom Bearing chewing up the Case Halves.Of course if you have Changed the Oil since you've been hearing the Noise you would have Seen Metal Shavings in the Oil.

At first I thought it was the Chain too but when I pulled the Valve cover and Turned it over there wasn"t really any slack to speak of.So I pulled theTensioner and Wound another Turn on the Spring.When I restarted it it was still the same.
One way you Can tell where the Noise is Coming from is to get a Long Stick.Something like a 3ft Dowl Rod and Stick it on Various Places on the Motor.Place your Thumb on the end and Hold your Ear to your Thumb. :thumb:
Jughead, I plan on doing just that.
I changed my oil recently, but the sound started after that so a little oil examination should tell me if that is the culprit. Thanx, first plausible suggestion I think.
If you see Fine looking Metal particles you might as well pull the Whole Oil pan to look and see if there are Bigger Shavings that have Settled on it that didn't make their way out when you Drained the Oil.Pull the Filter to see if you see Sparkleys in it.
My Bike only had a Little Over 5000 Miles on it when it happend.Looks Like Suzuki would have redesigned that Part of the Motor. :cookoo: Being a Dumb Farm Boy I still see that it doesn't work too well.I would have at least put a Thicker Bushing on that side of the Shaft Instead of those Damn Thin Pieces of Junk.Looks to be too much Stress on them on the Crank Drive side. :dunno_white:
It would not surprise me that one of the valves was not adjusted properly and is still ticking.
Who did the valves.....you or a shop?

He did the adjustment, then did it again. And then again just to be sure. :)
He's also a personal friend.
Did he rotate the motor over by hand, beween each adjustment to squeeze the oil out from under the shims? (He must have if he did the adjustment (measurement?) three times)
Was it a ticking sound like they have said? And, does it alternate, like you can almost time it, patterned sound. Like a tick tick tick, a minute goes by, for example, nothing, then tick tick tick again? Then keeps going at a pattern.
No, a constant noise like a manual roll up door chain.

Yeah he's pretty upset he can't find the noise.
Actually found the service at Micheal's in Reno to be decent for the gs. We took Dragonlover's gs for the valve clearance check. Mind you we'd measured clearance before we took it in. They had identical measurements. runs like a charm. Cheap to have done too.

You took off the header ??? if so, you'd prolly have gotten one of the exhaust gaskets crooked/missing ??? If its at the flange maybe try muffler tape, or exhaust paint or it will get a carbon deposit on it and seal up fine.
