Title: A real Exhaust thread.
Post by: CirclesCenter on January 25, 2007, 12:36:59 AM
Ok nerds. I've looked a bit an no one makes the exhaust I want.

Passengers? Screw'em.
Noise? Oh yes lotsa noise!
Power? In heaping steamy globs!

But the number one concern? Ground clearance. I want more lean.

I have access to a pipe bender, and I'm a damn fine welder. (And willing to go through 50 feet of pipe to get it right.) So there will be no problems there.

What I'm thinking is needed is a nice glasspack straight through muffler, small and short. That's where I'm having trouble. Most of my exhaust knowledge is for cars.

So help me out! :)

I have been talking about building an exhuast as well. last year I tig welded a 3" exhaust , including the DP for my 83 volvo turbo wagon.

if you look at the pic with the susuki racer in there he has small cans. and basically you described a Vance & Hines system thats what I have now. I am happy with it I just want somthing more cosmeticly really. I dont like the look of a big can or the exhuast sticking up so that is why I an thinking about it.

For ground clearance, maybe you can reroute the exhaust so it's undertail? I saw a GS with an undertail exhaust a couple months ago, and I thought it was pretty cool.

The problem with going undertail is that you either need a custom tail to produce more space, or a new shock to bump the rear up, to create more space, or both.

what about a crimped tube? they do this with cars a lot to route the exhuast over the axle.

you rob power any time theres a slight change in that tube, the crimp exhaust to clear axels when the car doesn't need power. besides, it alters the sound, muffles it, changes it.

I think the easiest way to get more lean would be to go with an underbike style exhaust.  It shouldn't be to hard to mod something up in that fashion.

You can use a Ducati exhaust mid-pipe to fab an undertail. BobB has a couple of pics of his posted in the WOF. IIRC it is from a 996. I am going to try using a 999 mid-pipe.

I don't think an undertail is required just yet.

I think at that point you'd be scraping the side of the engine.
