Title: Bass Question for Rvert
Post by: jake42 on February 04, 2007, 11:56:13 AM
Vert,
I need some help figuring out a run in some Helmet song.  Didn't know if you listened to them at all or not.

Also--it's -10 here so if anyone else has some good suggestions for bass and or guitar stuff to learn I'm up for it.

Jake

I am a big fan of Incubus and Chili Peppers- the bass is such an awesome instrument because it's technically the rhythm section but with so much to work with.
One of the most important things I've learned from having been in a band as both a bassist & guitarist is to know what notes to not hit. Letting the note hang for a bit on the bass can completely change a song, and intentionally skipping hits can really funk it up a bit. Play along with your favorite bands and you'll pick it up quicker :thumb:

Some of (In My Opinion) the most fun Bass lines to play along with:
Incubus- Are you in?
Cake- Love you Madly
Tool- Schism
311- Amber
Twin-A - Something Good (Awesome band that never hit huge: http://www.myspace.com/twina)
Bush- Comedown
Sublime - Scarlett Begonias
Ben Harper - With My Own Two Hands (Juan Nelson is awesome)

Hope you play along with one or all of those, they're staple for me

Here's some technique that will improve any player (and keep you busy 'till it warms up!)

I actually DO listen to helmet...  But, I'm only familiar with "Meantime."

Which song is it?  And have you looked it up on BassTabArchive (http://www.basstabarchive.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?search=h/helmet/) or similar sites?

It's a song from the aftertaste album called everything you wanted. I got most of it. Just a couple of little runs snuck in  there that I can't quite get.

Haven't found a good bass tab for the song anywhere.

"Exactly What You Wanted"

Sounds like it's not too hard...  I'll see if I can find some time to tab it out............   Who knows when that will be though.   :icon_confused:

One thing I do is run my bass into my computer so I can hear the song and my bass through the same speakers...  Then I just stumble through tabbing it out until I get all the notes...  Then I'll run the song a bunch looking at the tab.  Eventually I'll get it down.

nah, it's not too hard.
I've got most of it down from just listening to the song.
There's just a couple of little runs and fills that are snuck in there that I can't quite get.
If you wanted me to I could tell you exactly where timewise they occur in the song.

Sure...  Which ones?

And...  This Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c2coff=1&q=Helmet+%22Exactly+What+You+Wanted%22+%22Bass+Tab%22) has NOTHING...
