Title: No Idle
Post by: HondaHater on February 04, 2007, 09:59:03 PM
Hi , my 04 was sitting for 6 months with dead battery.  I finally gave in a bought a new battery at the dealer $90.  It starts and runs at full choke.  Idles up and down when choke is around half but cuts off instantly when choke is released all the way.  This happens even after leaving it idle for 20 mins.  Do I need a carb rebuild?

Not a rebuild, just a cleaning.

This is a stupid question but did you charge the new battery? Saturday my FZR's battery was weak. All the cells were way down. After filling up the cells the bike started up fine after jumping it off but it ran like crap for about 5 miles. A weak battery can definitely give some very carburator like symptoms.

That's a very good question.  Did the dealer charge the battery?

Wouldn't the battery only effect the starting and not the actual running of the bike?

Nope, a dead battery acts as a drain on the electrical system, it can cause uneven idle, inoperative tach, dimming lights, and a variety of other things. IIRC

Yes, I did charge the battery according to the directions it came with ( dealer did'nt have time).  I also checked it with my battery tester and it took the load very well.

I will be removing the carbs as soon as it warms up here...7 deg today.

Ok ..seems as though Derek had it right all along.  After removing the carbs there was no sings of any build up etc.  Put them back and no change, still would not idle.  I put the charger back on and had to leave town.  Came back 2 days later and saw that I had forgot the charger on.  Well it was a blessing.  The bike started up and ran like new.  Seems as though the battery needed a good long charge.  Thanks.
