Title: how long can battery last in the cold
Post by: RichyT415 on February 08, 2007, 08:23:37 AM
So I parked my bike outside 2 weeks ago not realizing it'll be in the 12-15 degrees here in the Northeast, so I haven't touched the bike at all.  How long can the battery last in this condition?  Do I need to go out and start the engine and ride it around to charge the battery? or is it good for another week or so when it'll warm up more?

i'd say depends... extreme temps will kill a weak battery, depends on how old your battery is.

I would be Pulling it out and try to Charge it.Usually 12 months is a Long life for the Batteries now since they are made in chiwan.More if you take very good care of them.If you pull it outand it's froze you might as well get a new Battery.

My battery died recently due to lower temps but it served me 4 years  :o
Battery charger is a must unless you like spending for new ones now and then  :icon_razz:
Also if the battery discharged, taking a ride, even a long one won't guarantee a full charge

The OEM service manual specs a recharge on the stock battery if not ridden within one month.

I assume this means at STP. Your T is well below that. Batteries are not like meat. The chemistry in them is less active at lower temps than normal temps.

So...as Jughead so eloquently said...pull it out and charge it. Better yet, pull it out and buy a battery tender type product and trickle charge it. That way you just need to drop it in an GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!   like Rossi.

Crappy, from the news here, I'm going to need a new battery for sure... I've had the bike stored since November with no charging ... Lowest it gets here is about -25c w/ windchill, and that's EXTREME... It's usually around -5c to -10c.

Guess it's a good thing batteries can be picked up pretty cheap...
