Title: Good price for a new '01 GS 500?

Howdy,

I've found a dealer that has a 2001 GS 500 for sale and he wants $4268 out the door. I'm thinking this is a little high. The Kelly blue book retail for a used bike is $3200. An extra grand for the factory warranty and a few less miles seems a bit much. What do you folks think? Anyone know of a bike for less somewhere?

According to the 2001 Suzuki Showroom (http://www.suzukicycles.com/sr_01/sportstreet/fs_gs500.htm) for the GS500, the MSRP was $4,399 which "do[es] not include freight/ destination or other dealer charges".

So if you're looking at brand new, that actually sounds pretty good - or it would have in 2001.  On the other hand, if the bike has been sitting for 2 years, the dealer may be willing to shave some more off to get the thing "out the door".

I wonder - there was someone in NW Arkansas that saw a new GS500 on a showroom floor for significantly less than MSRP.  It was a few months ago, and I can't remember the exact model year.

Anyway, if it were me, I'd keep looking.

if its really new, zero miles thats not a bad price but you have to negotiate assuming your depreciation loss once youdrive it off the lot...but you have to assume the absolute highest values from kbb or nadaguides for a prestine example. If its been sitting there forever you should be able to negotiate it down substantially-just be ready to walk away.

I bought my 01 with 425 miles on it from a dealer-for about $3500.

I bought my 2001 with about 190 on the ODO for 3100. It hadn't been ridden in a while so I had to clear the carbs and the tank has a really small ding in the top. Other than that it was in good condition and runs fine now. I bought mine from somebody that the dealer knew though so it wasn't a dealer pricing it. The dealer also had a 2002 with 300 miles for 3900 or so. I wouldn't pay over 4000 for any GS short of that turbocharged one ;)

Yeah I think that's too high.  I wouldn't pay more than 3500 for it, and would prefer a price of around 3300.  Afterall, it's 2 years old.  As Pablo said, the second you drive away with it, it's only going to be worth blue book or a hair more.  Are you willing to dump $1300 on a factory warranty?

He can do better. Let him know that you know this bike is over two years old and still on the floor. This isn't in THAT much demand. You'd like to take the bike, but you need to know a no-bullshit-bottom-line price. He paid about $3,875.00 Give or take a hundred. This would allow for destination charge difference. He CAN do better. WORK HIM!

Howdy,

Well, I found a new 2001 at two different dealerships. I've got them haggling back and forth right now over the price. The best deal so far is $3950 for final drive out with tax, title, license, etc,... I'm hoping to get them down another hundred or so and then I'll be happy. We might possibly pick up the bike today or maybe next Tuesday.

Are there any things I need to be aware of on this bike that should be taken care of right after buying it? I know about the first service and all that, I'm thinking more of factory goofs that need to be corrected, like jetting, or a messed up part or something? Recall stuff?

Any info greatly appreciated. I will try to get pics of my friend after she gets the bike and post them here!

WELL GO BACK UP THERE AND LOOK FOR EVERY LITTLE BUMP OR SCRATCH AND ASK IF YOU CAN GET IT FOR LESS. MY DAD GOT ONE BIKE DOWNFROM I THINK 3,000 TO ABOUT 2,100 AND IT WAS NEARLY PERFECT.

I bought my '01 in Aug '01 from a dealer here in upstate NY for $4000.00 "out the door" price...prep., tax, license fees....the whole shbang.  That was 2 years ago.  I wouldn't go more than around 3500 now.  After all, if the dealer has a 2 year old bike in stock it's because demand is light....good for you.

Hey sorry to be hoggin this string, but I just had another thought.  You can always haggle for things that do not cost the dealer as much as cutting his price, but that are of value to you...gear ( a jacket, a tank bag) parts (filters are always nice) and maybe a couple of free service calls.  Go for it.

I bought my 2002 this spring from a dealer.  Perfect condition, 7 miles.  I paid $3999 out the door.  If he wont go lower than that, I'd tell him to take a hike.

Good point dmp221, asking to throw in a helmet, cargo net, jacket, is a great way to bring the cost down. The dealers will part with this much easier than strait up money.
