I'm trying to install bar end mirrors on my very stock 1996 gs500. I can unscrew the cap and balancer. I need to remove the screw houssing that stays inside the bar. How do i get that S.O.B. out?
These things vary a bit but normally (and on my '03) you just slacken it a bit and "jiggle" it out pulling and waggling it. They are normally held in by the tightening motion compressing a barrel shaped piece of softish rubber so that it expands and grips, slacken it just enough to allow movement. If you slacken too far the bits and bobs inside fall apart and you have to prat around getting them out with wire hooks and sometimes a magnet for the last nut. This is best avoided - I know, I've done it.
I don't know exactly which years, but some are integral (or welded) to the inside of the bar. You would have to drill it out.
CB2RN is dead on.
It sounds like yours has the welded insert.

Here's a old pic of the end of one of my bars...(http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/41/41309/folders/180948/Thumbnails/1375270ebaybar1.jpg) (http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/41/41309/folders/180948/1375270ebaybar1.jpg)
It would be easier to find the non-insert type rather than try to drill those out...well sorta easier.
Or buy a cheap set of bikemaster bars.

I haven't experienced this myself, but wouldn't an easier removal method be to just RIDE the GS??
Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know of a good bar end mirror system? One that will work on my bike? Thanks!
