...though I am busy at work and have had the best 3 month stretch in 4 years  Some days the phone rings for hours non stop.
My boss (Mr. flim flam man (http://www.umass.edu/rso/aepi/pledge%20names/lumbergh.jpg) ) says that times are getting tight and our office is in eminant danger of being closed. What a putz. Doesn't matter that we are busy and making about 100k gross profit a month. Oh well. Lets see if things settle down, I told him don't beat around the bush, if he/they intend on pulling the plug to do it and let me know with advance warning so I can get things in order for the switch.
Friggin corporate bullshit :x Office Space the movie was right -corporations SUCK! Anyone need an A+ tech out there? Snapper, anyone????
Those corporate scumbags...Been there been screwed by that....many times.... Ironically the IT recession was better for me than the Boom.... If these idiots could find their arse with both hands we'd have far fewer ups and downs...
I totally feel for you....
Cool.
Srinath.
Like it has been said (by me)...there is no democrats or republicans...there is only stupid corrupt politicians and smart corrupt politicians.
Dude- I am only hoping they lay me off... you are welcome to have my job!
That totally SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in a VERY CRAPPY MOOD right now. It amazes me that places like this get any work done what so ever! They have their head so far up their a$$s that they are suffering from a lack of oxygen!
I have heard that EMC will be looking for a few folks. Web and server stuff mostly I think. They have 4 pos to fill. Thats a story for after a ride! ;)
I think I will start playing the lottery more frequently.
:x
BTW I have been through the "You may lose your job" about 15 times here in less than 6 months. Verizon is gearing up for what might possibly be one of the longest strikes yet. We think when they get though with that - "POOF" all us contractors will be gone. Today, I am ok with that. Tomorrow I may not be.
Yeahhhh.....did you get the memo I sent out?
Riiiigggghhhtt, I'll make sure you get a copy of that memo.
Did you forget the cover page on your TPS report?
I have the oportunity to get out of a helpdesk into doing some field work. Only trouble is that it doesn't pay as well per hour and it will be a LOT more work. But at least it should be fairly rewarding work. Plus I'll get full benefits which I don't have right now.
I'm giving my contracting company the chance to give me a raise. If they can't come through, I'm gone.
This is the first offer I've had in 2 years of searching and probably 1000 resumes sent out. Man I miss Y2k and nepatisim ;)
Why didn't I give Bose enough time to interview me in 2000? Why O why?
I think I missed the TPS coversheet memo. Can I have a piece of cake?
I love that movie!!
John, send me your resume...!!
I was fired from my job on Saturday. It sucks :x
Cam can I send you mine too!
:P
sorry to hear this news john..
here is something to get you started..
http://boston.craigslist.org/
My job is getting painful.. i am quitting in the next week if this guy does not let up with his ass crawling over me constantly.
That sucks! :bs:
Any life in the California opportunity you mentioned a while back?
No openings at my company right now unless they fire me for being on GStwin.com all day. :)
(I had a boss that would say things straight out of OS. I had to fight to keep from cracking a smile when he did it.)
I had a fellow collegue quote OS two weeks ago in a meeting... it was a good thing we were alone in a conference room and dialed into to meeting. We went on mute and fell on the floor laughing. Course we needed a good laugh by then. After the call we were all told we had attitude problems. My attitude is fine until you tell me I am doing something wrong but won't provide an example of the "right way". :P
John, send me your resume too. I'll send it in to my company. :thumb:
I said seeya to the tech thing almost two years ago. I was making great bucks admin/managing a billion ad impressions a year with NetGravity and DART and was doing very well at it.
Sales support and advertising deal design and a strong background in client/server programming..I loved it. I translated the tech stuff for the business folks, and translated the business needs to the tech folks. What do I have now? A highly specialized resume that's worth bunk.
But I'm not bitter or anything.
Would I do it again if someone offered me a job tomorrow?
Yes. Yes I would.

I talk to the customers so the engineers don't have to!!!!
What's wrong with you people!!!!!!!???????
Sorry Office Space is one of my favorite movies
I hope things work out with your job oh
Benevolent Site Admin
academia is the place for me.
i work 2 days a week this summer and get paid for it.
plus i got my dept to send me to milwaukee to cut up human brains and spinal cords for 3 days on their tab...
hello from milwaukee..\
jake
But, but, thaaaats my stapler.
Go to college, get an education, do you want to end up being a grave digger for the rest of your life?
Everytime I pass Forest Lawn, I think to my self "Now there's a secure occupation."
We had the big "feel good" meeting today. Didn't sound to promising. How much are shovels these days?
Keep your chin up John and Steve. Change is always for the better!
Paul
What the hell is a resume? I've been here for 14 years - administrating this little network and running the office and handling parts calls. Lets see previous to this job I worked at Radio Shack way back in 1989 and before -started as a teen ager. Wow huh? 2 jobs in like 18 years of working.
I guess I need to look at examples of resumes on the web and see how exactly to do one. Maybe I'll play with it and send you guys a copy and have you rate it for content and quality?
And snapper. I have a spare bedroom if you hit the skids
Is there space in the garage for my bike? Thats all I really care about!
2 Jobs in 18 yrs... geez you are not a true techie then! I have had.. lets see-letme counton my fingers here...in 6 years of doing this... I have had 4 different jobs. :o  The only way we got a raise was to change jobs. Started at a credit union- they pay nothing- and took steps to make more $$.
Now if I can only stay employed I'll be ok. hehe

I feel for you. I've been doing the IT thing at my company since 1990 (actually worked contract here for a couple years prior to that). I've had 8-9 bosses in that time, 3 of which no longer work for the company.
My father had a friend in his late 50's who lost his job a few years back. He had worked for the same company since he was a teenager. The company had merged and changed names half a dozen times in that period.

Ditto, got out of field work and work in engineerign now for my GC but still no raise. We got more work than we can do now but somehow we "aren't making money right now".
Best of luck to everyone - got a BS in Env. Science from Va Tech, 5th in ym major, two minors, and I am still working for a construction company LOL.

At least you get to keep your Swingline (sp?) stapler.
Losing a job is unfair, and usually beyond your control...after the initial shock, I think you'll find that change is good. Think of this as an unplanned opportunity to move to something better, cause that's the way these things almsot always work out. And yes, I've been there. Ride more. :thumb:
Contractors at Verizon have a 2 yr limit. Sometimes if they really like you they will find a way to keep you around. Sometimes the two yrs come up and you're done. Most of the folks I work with are consultants... so I have seen them come and go. Most of them have almost planned for it (mentally not $$) so they were almost happy.
To be honest I was only happy to see one of them go... I stole his monitor on his last day before he left. He came whining to my cube saying "I'm not even gone yet! Give it back!"
I did give it back, the pleasure I got from his reaction was absolutely wonderful. In fact I sit here now smiling as I think of it. He thought he'd be around forever. Arrogant snot.
I guess what my point is... is that we ALL, no matter what our jobs are, have a chance that we could be laid off. Its happening in almost every industry. So mentally it's a good idea to prepare for if that day comes.
So think about it.. can you pay you rent/mortgage on unemployment? Etc... plan it out in you head... scary but makes it less scary if it happens.

If your plans take you through the Salt Lake City area, let me know!
NOTE: I'll be on another trip to B.C. for 11 days in August, so let me know
in advance!
Let me qualify that (now that I reread it). I meant IF I get laid off I'd plan a cross country trip on a bike, because I'll have time. Otherwise I'm stuck here.
Nice to see so many peeps would let me crash at their place and leave in the morning with an empty liquir cabnet and refridgerator   :thumb:
What Liquor cabinet...and no couch for you...Floor...and surrounded by boxes...and I'll take parts off your GS....
Ha now that will teach you....
Cool.
Srinath.
