When it's constantly wet weather as it is in the Pac NW right now, my cuffs get smelly. You know, the wet/disheveled sweetish bum-bacteria type wet cuff smell. Either Im just a filthy, nasty, dirty smelly person, or it's the focking Fieldsheer design with cloth cuff ends and absorbent wicking material just inside. Becomes smelly.
You're not supposed to wash the jacket in water, rather wipe with a rag. However this is a saturation issue and so in the past I've taken to soaking the cuffs briefly in hot water with plenty of powder detergent, rinsing a couple times, then squeeze and air drying. Doesn't stop the problem for very long and it seems it adds to pilling and wear on the sleeve ends.
Anyone know of a good spray or other treatment? I sprayed the outside (nylon weave + cloth cuff) with waterproofing stuff, more to kill off bacteria than to waterproof it, but doubtful this is good for the skin. Maybe some kind of disinfectant spray.
I suppose I could buy an all-leather jacket but as spring is almost here I don't see that it's worth it right now.
Whoever solves this problem might even make a fortune... :flipoff:

you could always wear liners . like the thin cotton ones we wear under our chem gear in the airforce

duh. it's an armored moto jacket, just happens to be nylon. it works just not as *cool*... and yea the fabric is a problem in the rain. Lesson learned.

I bet there's plenty of people here who know I'm right without question. I'm sure Brian will comment. But don't let that deter you. There's absolutely no reason why you should listen to those of us who learned the hard way.

don't worry, mak is just a little high strung. Just for the record though leather >> good armored textile > cheap textile > plain jacket to keep warm/nothing/squid. So if you want to get a better jacket to replace or add to your collection i would spring for leather with good vents.
As for the smell, get the jacket dry cleaned. I have know lots of my friends that do this about twice a year/season just because of the sweat factor. Of course they have removable armor, if yours isn't removable I don't know that dry cleaning is an option, might google search or wait till someone chimes in with a +1 or telling me that I am a retard.
Wear rain gloves with gauntlets. And, a rainsuit. I always do both. And, you'll need a rainsuit to go over the leather jacket that you'll eventually get to replace your textile jacket anyway.
rain suits also help in extreme cold, to keep wind out. But then again if you get leather, the leather keeps the wind out just as good :laugh: :laugh:

Wear gauntlets, get a rain cover (over-jacket), and/or get a different jacket...

That stuff works wonders.
Rain suits are very good news. Even though it says don't I think i would be inclined to wash it, drip it dry on a sturdy hanger and waterproof spray it. Works for me.

Leather is not good wet! Eventually it will get soggy, regardless of how much you oil it. That 10lb jacket will suddenly weigh 40lbs. All the while it's going to smell, well, like you're wearing part of a dead animal. You can't throw it in the washing machine, so it gets progresstively worse. When it dries out (eventually) it will be incredibly stiff. You'll have to carefully oil and condition it to soften the leather. If you don't, the leather will crack.
Under rain gear I would highly suggest textile, especially if you're on a trip and need a dry jacket in the AM. It isn't as abrasion resistant as leather, but you're not going to wear it very often.

Mesh and textile jackets work fine. When mesh gets wet, you get wet. When leather gets wet, you get wet and the leather stays wet for days. My leather jacket got absolutely SOAKED one time, and it sucked a lot.
The answer to your problems is... WEAR A RAIN JACKET.
