Hello, long time reader, first time poster.
I bought an 89 GS500 for my wife to learn on last season but it caught the mod bug like everything else i own. I run a small shop that caters to european bike service, parts and customizing so i had so many parts at my disposal to make the job easy.

The subframe will be done today and i will put pics up later when its done.
Parts that i have to go on:
636 front end
06 gsxr shock
ktm SX swing arm
640 Supermoto Wheels (3.5x17-5x17)
Monster seat w/custon aluminum removable subframe
04 gs tank
06 gsxr 750 muffler (may or may not use this)
custom rearsets
Motor is under developemnet with plans so far of: 78mm pistons, falicon balanced crank, balencerectomy, FCR or FCRs, megacycle cams, head porting. Since it is the wifes bike i want to keep it trouble free and reliable.
Wish me luck on it. Any Ideas, comments, critisism VERY welcome.

I wish i knew what kind of numbers to expect. I think the bike is an absolute riot to ride now but it has 62,000 km's and has to be in need of a refresh. It runs perfect and starts in sub zero (celcius) temp. all fall.
Any ideas on hp numbers? I would hope for mid 50's.

in looking at it again, that's what Suzuki should do to update the GS from the factory.

Pretty cool. Nice job, definitely keep posting update pics... I agree with Baco99 I would love to see a Naked GS refresh released with these kinds of updates. Very cool. And I stand by my NT650 comment LOL, it really reminds me of that minus the aluminum frame. Love it!
Yeah i'd love to see a total redesign resembling this too (might be a little bias though) but the virtually untouched design of the gs makes it what it is. It's cheap for a reason i guess. No millions spent on design, no thousands added to the price.
There is a wrecked 650 ninja up here that i'm bidding on mainly for the Engine management. I was thinking falicon could stroke my crank a bit to get me closer to 600cc. 2 mm more stroke gives me 30 some odd cc's.
Does anybody have a running motor running larger than 555cc's?
I don't know how well the progress is going to come over the next week. We've had snow all week and nobody has been able to drop off bikes at the shop. Its sunny and warm this morning so the bike will poor in and i'll be up to my ears.

If your pretty handy with a welder and a bender you could do this with ease. I'm trying to keep the bike on a budget but i think it looks wicked good. Can't wait to finish.
I won a Katana wheel on ebay this morning so i may kybosh the supermoto wheels because i want to build another supermoto. XR400! Should be into it for under $2500!!! I'm stoked about it.
i don't think they'd spend more than a few hundred thousand on these changes. use off-the-shelf parts from other bikes, add a half-faired model, and be done with it. watch the sales double with the changes.
i'm not asking for a single-sided swing arm or anything, but dual front rotors, bigger rear wheel, sleeker seat/undertail, slicker exhaust, and a few more HP.
Suzuki did that years ago. GSXR600. :laugh:
I agree with you, but I'm not in the market for a new bike. Maybe you could organize a mass email protest to Suzuki. :dunno_white:
I would think Suzuki's thinkers will do away with the GS for good. Beginner sport bikes are loosing ground to cheaper 600's. from what I see anyway.
Look at the Gs500's direct competition. Of course I may be wrong, I stopped reading sportbike magazines a couple years ago.
the GS has been around since 89' with essentially no changes. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a new design already thought up, if they are considering keeping a GS like bike around.
then again I don't know when to stop typing, I am sooooo bored and there arent many other thread I feel a need to reply too. Oh well lemm see if I can find another. Getting paid to sit around is boring work.

My design is almost exactly that. I just picked up the frame I intend to cut up. (THanks Chuck)
I only have access to a press, not a bender. I was gonna take the piece to a shop to get pressed. But to the backburner it goes, I have a new V8 to install. :laugh:
does that tail come from a monster also? You have any other tail plastics lying around the shop (cracked/broken) you could donate to a guy whose wife won't let him spend another dime until his truck gets running?

Others have done it in the past. Enlarging the cases for bigger sleeves...then you will start breaking cranks. Lee (onefastgs) has a 627 (IIRC).
I am working on building a 650, but using a GR650 motor and a 4-valve GSXR head. No problem with the crank breaking, the GR's is a lot bigger. May keep the stock bore if my pistons fit properly. If not, then I will bore it to the max. Got bored with building the basic 500, 541, 555.

Hahaha, don't i know it. I have a Volvo 850 turbo that i thought it would be a good idea to build a 400hp motor for. Well i thought it was a good idea. I'm not really "allowed" to start any projects until i can actually drive the volvo.
I have another monster seat (shorter people buy new bikes and buy the "low" seat for them and don't want the originals) but, i can't let it go just yet. The bike in the picture of the wheels could go any direction at this point of developement. I was thinking DESMOSEDICI but thats another story.
i think the difference between ours and cheaper 600s is the air-cooler vs water-cooled argument. i like things simpler, hence i like my air-cooled bike. yes, there are limitations, but it's easier to trouble shoot.

Yeah, its a T5 with TD04-18t turbo, custom manifold, blue top injectors, 3" downpipe, venolia pistons, pauter rods blah blah blah. Money pit to say the least. Its all in and done now. The day i added coolant it started pooring out somewhere on the rear of the engine. i slammed to hood and havent looked at it in almost two months. I hate Cars!

I took the liberty of using your pic to tweek my design, since yours is the only one to date to come close to what I am shooting for.
I used the "paint" to change your pic to reflect my project Ideas.
I plan on moving the lower subframe junction point up. here is what I came up with.

My concern is the structural integrity of moving the lower subframe junction point up. My friends tend to think it will not support my weight. I think it will do just fine. It is steel after all.
Since you have first hand experience fabricating a new one-off subframe, I'd like your opinion on that, as well as anyone elses.

Y'know i almost feel bad about changing the old girl too much. There is so much i respect about the simplicity and functionality of the gs, it seems a shame to ignore that. I'm just one of those people that thinks i can do it better my way. Heck, my wife is a 3D graphic designer but i choose to use "paint" to make my prototype pic of the GS.

If you look at my design, the subframe is different then how i ended up building it. The design was not strong enough for my 320 lb wife. Just kidding, it was probably strong enough for her (115 lb) but it flexxed enough to notice with (185 lb) me on it. That ruled out any chance of emergency two up or set of bags. The top portion is aluminum on mine while i used chromemoly on the lower section. Mainly because i am cheap and had the steel lying around and no aluminum. left. It works well, i might change it but for now i'm fine with it. Good luck with your project, anything i can do to help, let me know.
