i just bought a PNY geForce FX 5200 128mb AGP card off of ebay. i throw the card in and reboot. now i go to the PNY site and dload what i THINK may be the correct driver. its 40 FREAKING MBs. but then i go to install the driver and it brings up an error before it can begin the installation. it says that i have another install shield wizard open and i have to close it first. well i dont and cant figure out what system process would cause taht message to show up. should i install it in safe mode? i dont remember how to manualy get into safe mode..
F8 at boot should get you into safe mode...Is it telling you that you need to install ActiveX?
well when i booted w/ the new card it works. just crappily. there is a generic windows driver in place of the real one until i get it installed. i see nothing about active x. i'll try the safe mode thing again..
ok so i got the driver installed in safe mode. rebooted and its all good now. however i dont really see a difference btw my 8mb card and this 128mb card. strange. one incredibly bad thing. my computer runs like crap now! its slow as balls. about ever 3 seconds it has a 1/2 second retard moment.. whats going on???
EDIT:
ok so i restarted. it seems to run just fine now but i REALLY dont see any difference with the new card? i had an ATi Rage 128pro or something. it was 8mb. this should be a hell of a lot better! yet it does nothing for me.
It's not going to do anything unless you're playing games, except maybe that you can set the screen resolution higher, but realistically, that depends more on your monitor than your video card for normal desktop use.
right because ALL modern day graphic cards can run normal desktop use at its best. but videos. shouldnt they be running smoother and less pixely? they havent changed a bit. winamp visualization should be MUCH better too right? i went to go check it out but when i tried opening the visualization window, it said my graphics card doesnt support direct x. thats bull. i just dont know how to fix that.
Have you downloaded the newest direct X?

If you go to device manager, does it say your drivers are properly installed? (Does it say the right card)

The videos are pixellated because of the algorithms used to compress them. They will most likely be exactly the same as the were before. If they are choppy, either 1) The video was badly encoded, 2) your internet connection can't keep up with the video stream (if you're streaming), or 3) your processor can't keep up with decoding the video. Order of likelihood is probably 2, 1, 3.
I don't know about winamp visualizations, but I don't see how they can really tax even a crappy 8 meg card. However, the DirectX problem is strange. I don't know how to fix it either. As I recall, you can't uninstall DirectX. Or maybe it's you can't unstall a DirectX update. Either way, it makes reinstalling DirectX difficult. It's something I'd have to play with.
I'd try uninstalling the video card drivers, rebooting, and going to the Windows Update site to see what's there. More than likely they'll have a driver for your card. Try that driver, as it will be a "Microsoft Approved" driver (whatever that means).

its 162mb?? thats huge! also it that stupid as microsoft wants me to validate my copy of windows before i can download it. any mirror sites?
i found a mirror and it was only 44mb. downloaded it and it worked! fixed my issue. now i have a new one!
in winamp and ONLY winamp, my videos are all DARK. really dark. can barely see it. i tried the same vids in windows media player and it worked great.
ok this just got realllllllllllly weird. soo im watching a video thats so dark i can barely see it. i wanted to take a screenshot that i could post up here. so i hit the key and go into photoshop. i paste the screenshot as a new image. it has a screenshot of the player but where there is supposed to be the movie, it acts like a window and i can see video playing behind photoshop. wtf is giong on?
Usually most programs that play videos will not allow you to take screenshots because their was an exploit for HD-DVD's and DVD's where pirates would take screenshot after screenshot and paste them together to form the movie.
like the screenshot feature is disabled? cuz i did it! but like i said, there is nothing in the vid window when i paste it
No, it does just that. Blacks out the video.

Sorry, that's a fact of life with XP. In Vista, you have no choice. Don't like it? Stop using Windows.
