Title: My Cobra...
Post by: Turd Ferguson on March 05, 2007, 07:06:13 AM
Welp, sold the Ducati, so I had to find something new to obsess over.  I just bought a 1996 Mustang Cobra that has been garage kept and babied like crazy.

I'm trying to get good at launching this thing so I can take it to the track.  It should run 12.80's or so, but we'll see.  Its got the DOHC 4.6 factory rated at 305hp.  The major mods are as follows...

HBA shorty headers
Dr. Gas non-catalytic x-pipe
Bassani stainless cat-back
Comp Cams
Accufab throttle body
Cold air induction
Triple plate ceramic clutch
Aluminum flywheel
TKO transmission
Steeda tri-ax shifter
Crome moly drive shaft
3.73 gears
Auburn differential
Eibach Sportline springs
Tokico shocks/struts
Camber/caster plates
Aftermarket rear lower control arms
Adjustable rear upper control arms
weld-in subframe connectors

That's pretty much all that I can remember right now.  I'm looking to put some drag radials on there this spring/summer, as its got a traction problem.  Even with some brand new BFGoodrich g-force tires, it'll bust sideways in 3rd until you let up.  I got rubber easily last night at 50 mph... :o

Here is a poor quality sound clip...

Man...don't know quite what to say about that...I am kinda fond of the old girl.  And yes....2 chamber flowmasters will make a Honda Civic soil itself  :icon_mrgreen:

I love it when these kids think their little 4 bangers are the stuff....most of them don't know what fast is....

Sweet stang. I really liked the mid 90's body style. Outside of the original fastback and the current generation, it may be my favorite. (Of course I'm a bit biased with my '07 GT.)

Turd ... whatever you do ... replace the POS pot metal connecting rods ford put in the 4.6 V8's with somehting made of a real metal ...
Your mods will bend your rods and you'd be replacing the whole motor when that happens.
The F-150's got them too ... total POS but works on a stock motor ... pump it up and you're dead.
Cool.

Turd, your car is sweet, and it sounds the shaZam!, but you should really supercharge the thing. Or a twin turbo if you're feeling extra stupid... and I know you could do it too.

Stock rwhp should be 270 or so, and I think around 200 lb-ft of torque. You could easily get a streetable 400 in both with some forced induction, or maybe just some decent engine work.

I've seen his car on the highway...that exhaust looks stock but you can't see the dump.  It opens up anytime the car boosts.

It's got to be the prettiest civic ever.

QuoteI love it when these kids think their little 4 bangers are the stuff....most of them don't know what fast is....

big motors are for going fast in a straight line. little motors are for going fast. i grew up with drag racing, i love it, i raced a 72 cutlass with an internally stock 455, ford 9.0 w/ 4.11's, 4link drag suspension, B&M ratchet shifter, completely gutted, caged, everything, carbon fiber hood with a 7in scoop (had to make room for the intake and airfilter) in HS (the smart students in my car club that cared about cars built it and raced it locally in San Diego). The cars fastest time was 7.9 in the 1/8th, we never took it to a 1/4. But quite frankly, drag racing doesn't last long enough, i would much rather play on a road course with light car and a tiny motor making way too much power.

Nice stang though turd. My first love was a mustang...

Yup, most dyno at 270-275 rwhp stock.  This thing has a few engine mods (cams, exhaust, bolt ons) but I'm not sure what the hp gain would be.  Dude, this car WILL be Procharged by this time next year.  I just don't have the money right now.

I'm glad Mak doesn't like the SN95's cause I've seen the kind of stuff he does like.  MAKZUKI!!!

yeah i got about 450hp out of my 357 in my '95 firebird with no forced induction.  But then again I had a little over a liter more to work with than you do.

What mods (besides 0.040 over bore) did you have?  High horsepower on an N/A DOHC 4.6 isn't extremely hard, just extremely expensive.  Small block Chevy's are freakin cheap to mod.

engine: MSD ignition, ram air (not that way from factory), cold air intake, eliminated warmed throttle body, new injectors, new computer, and high flow dual exaust, port and polish on intake, stiffer valve springs / cams.

outside: Springs and beefier suspention braces for better handling.

I wish that I still had it but when i went through my divorce I had to sell it cause I was no the verge of being a homeless working man.  I really really really really really really really miss that car.  The next thing on my list was to supercharge it, i had the supercharger and heads picked out but they were pricy.  I was projecting around 650hp.  Or course then i would have probably had to replace the axels and possibly tranny but that was my fun car...........i miss her......

PS forgot exaust manifolds, included those w/ high flow exhaust in my brain.  And the Dyno and the school I used to go actually said that rear wheel power was 391 horsies.  Being that my car was a manual I figured about a 15% loss from the flywheel so i figured the actualy output of the engine was around 450hp.  Stock the firebird with the 350 that year was pushing 290 and with minor mods will go to 310-320.

Other than a cam, you did have minor mods though.  Those are extremely impressive numbers considering your mods!  100hp gain with cam, exhaust, port/polish stock heads/intake and intake mods!  I've got all of the same mods (minus port/polish which is really only a few hp on most motors) and I'm hoping for a 40 hp gain.

Most RWD cars have AT LEAST 20% driveline loss, usually 25%.

whhhaaaaaaaaaaat?

Factory claimed 140hp at the crank with my SE RX-7.  Dyno'ed 127rwhp.
Ftacroy claimed 190hp at the crank with my 328i.  Dyno's 167rwhp.
Fortacy claimed 200hp at the crank with my Supra.  Dyno'ed 174rwhp.

I've never seen a manual drivetrain in ANY car suck up a 20% drivetrain loss.

Mak, I'm failing to see how your dyno numbers vs. factory numbers prove anything about driveline loss.  Search around, the general consensus in the RWD performance car world is 20-25%.

but the thing is , is that manual performance cars or auto?  big difference, do they make the difference in the sensus?

it did have edlebrock heads but i didn't put them on, the previous owner did, i forgot about those.  And yeah your numbers are off manuals tend to eat 15-17% and autos tend to eat 20-23% because of the torque converter.

edit : Cams were bought to go with the heads cause i don't know why the previous owner didn't...
